Rusted out floor pans

I have finally gotten around to fixing the floor pans in my 72 240Z. After pulling the seats, etc. I couldn't believe just how bad bad was. So now I need some help. I had planned on getting the replacement floor pans for Charlie Osborne at Zedd Findings. I looked at these floor pans and I released that they don't have the cross piece for the front seat mountin points and they don't seem to have the back seat mounting points. So I guess what I am asking is for any comments you may have on replacing floor pans, where did you get the pans and what leasons learned you could share with me.

Yikes, Jimmy! You're right those are in bad shape. I've never seen new mounting pieces sold separately before; in most cases, the old ones are reused then welded on the new floor pans. I would check some junkyards and see if they can cut some mounting brackets out of a Z for you. The Zedd Findings floor pans are the best ones available out there (also available from Motorsport).

If I had known, I would have stopped by, I went to the Studebaker show and swap meet in Charleston today-the car turn out was a dissappointment.

I have a spare set of the seat mounts that came with my floor pans-from Charley Osborne.

Those look my mine before I got a set from Osborne put in. I also needed rockers, and the inner rockers were rotted also and had to be made. Find a good welder if youre not doing it. My guy ended up putting one rocker a touch high. I would also suggest asking someone what order it should be done in, and how to do it so the frame stays straight and all that.

I just had my old seat braces put in the new floors. I brought the guy a seat bottom so he could line it all up, and I also had the frame/body measurements photocopied for him in case he needed it. Those were in the FSM i think.

That's great that John J. sells the seat mounts, I didn't know anyone made them. While you're at it, Jimmy, I would recommend that you also buy the new front & rear frame rail sections from John J. as well as the floor pans/frame rails from Zedd Findings or Motorsport's '"Premium" floor pans/rails (exact same product). Pics of all this stuff is below:

I was able to reuse my old seat supports . DO NOT CUT ANY METAL until you have your new pans in hand . I used Zedd findings floor pans and as has been said, they are first rate. When you cut the spot welds and remove the seat supports from he trans tunnel , just have he welder weld them in the same position. It looks like you may have to replace some metal on the trans tunnel . It all depends on how bad the rust is up the sides from the floor. All this metal is vary thin, but it still is part of the total strength of the car . What I did was to fit and position the new floor in place . Then I used self-tapping sheet metal screws and screwed the metal in place. I ended up with the screws about 5'' apart all the way around . When the my welder welded in the pan . As he went along he removed he screws and filled the holes. I made sure all the metal was clean before it was screwed together. This will save you bucks because your welder wont waist his time cleaning . I had a certified welder do mine and he ended up using his TIG because of the thin metal . Gary

Just a word of advice.

When you fit the new floormetal, modify the re-inforcing channel that is welded beneath the floor.

I had some new 2mm thick channels folded up by a local sheet metal shop that extended full length to the rear of the floor pan, not 1/2 way like the 240Z stockers do.

These add quite markedly to the rigidity of the floor and can be enclosed or left open ended.

It wasn't until sometime later that a friend of mine remarked that the 260Z channels were the same design.

I didn't know this at the time but I guess I was on the same wavelength as Nissan re the problem :)

Jimmy man those are bad. The Charleston air has taken its tole on them. I am getting ready to do mine and have the passenger side already out. My firewall and battery tray are gone, so I had to rebuild that first. I decided to make a sheetmatal box and use a Optima battery and a Detroit Speed & Engineering aluminum battery hold down. I know DSE does 1st gen camaro but this part is way cool and the optima battery shouldn't leak anymore acid. I like the Zedd findings pans and will mig weld those in pretty soon.
