reverse light button?

Yes it is A switch. But it is A switch that is screwed into your transmission. You can find it on the pass. side (I think) it will have two wires run to it.

I have never done this but have been told that you can run jumper wires from there and hook up your rev. lamps on A toggle type switch. Just dont leave them on :stupid:

Hi Driftmunky,

the manual transmissions (4 and 5 speed) have a switch screwed into the 'box at the rear by the gearbox xmember on the same side as the speedo drive.

The auto trans. has a rotary switch on the trans. speed selector.

These switches simply short the harness wires together to light the reverse lamps.

The auto trans. switch is adjustable to allow starting in P or N only and Reverse lamps in R only.

The switches can be checked by testing for continuity at the transmission with a multi-meter.

The harness can be checked by turning on the ignition and shorting the harness wires together.

This should light the reverse lamps.

The other wires are for the NEUTRAL switch and inhibitor relay.

Both types of switches are easily replaced if proven faulty.

I don't think wiring in a toggle switch to replace the factory switch is a good idea, and my guess is it is probably illegal.

What happens if the reverse lights are coming on when you are in Fourth?? I had someone follow me the other day and discovered this. The reverse lights function properly, I just can't figure out why my reverse lights are coming on in topgear? Any help appreciated.

I filled my tranny with Royal Purple gear oil through the reverse switch, as I could not get the fill plug removed. That was not a problem, but now the reverse lights stay on all the time whether in all gears, not just reverse. Do the wires connect in a certain way, or are they like the brake light switch which doesn't matter? Would a rubber washer have any impact on the effectiveness of the reverse switch? I put one on to provide a tighter fit to the tranny housing. Or, is my switch shot?

Thanks!

I know that this is an old topic, but I use it for my question. Hope it's ok :)

I had my 240Z 10/70 (manual transmission) painted and I've been putting the car together for the last months.

I've got the engine running again but I have some electrical issues. One is that when a connected the battery the reverselight was on at once, and I had to disconnect the bulbs.

I do not remember if the reverse lights worked before the project, I had the car just for a couple of weeks before I took the tail-lights of.

The switch on the gearbox looks ok, but the two wires are cut (not by me).

My question is that where should the two wires go from the switch? Pretty strange that the reverselight are on as soon as I connect the battery LOL
