beandip said it all..."It's a labor of love" I paid $1400. for my '76-Z from a mechanic/friend of mine that got her from a salvage yard. I found out later that he paid only $400 for her. I have put about 3k into her and will be doing paint soon. I Love this car more and more every day and would not take less than 10 k as she sit's right now...!

LegendZ,

It really depends on what you want out of your Z car and what you are willing to pay. If you are looking for something to refresh/do some moding to you can find some really nice half-done projects out there which give you a nice blank canvas to work on. You will end up spending in the 3 to 8k range for the car depending on what comes with it and another 8 to 15k on making it 'perfect'.

Another option is waiting for a ready to drive car to come around. There is a member from Houston who is selling his because of a divorce. It's a super nice car and you could be getting a good deal with the car. I looked for the post, but couldn't find it. Someone who remembers please link.

If you enjoy working on cars and want this to be a project, have the space, time, an understanding wife you can find a car which is cheap and go from there.

In the end the car to be 'really nice' is going to cost some $$$, but on the other hand we drop 20k on new cars all the time which depreciate in value every day we own them. These cars will keep their value at the VERY LEAST, and most will appreciate. One reason I didn't have a problem spending the money on my car.

Mine was a gift from the original owner, my Father-in-Law. 26,000 original miles. But I have just over $5500 in the refresh, and more to follow. Still needs struts, sideview mirror, replacement seat covers, carpets and a radio.

Then I can work on getting the minor dings out.

$625 with very little rust and purred like a dream. Some 97,000 miles on it, with 5,000 miles on a engine/tranny rebuild that happened a few years ago.

Have put in $250 under the hood, and $100 for the rear hatch window. That is it so far.

Saving up for brakes, the whole ignition setup, suspension, springs, tires, and a few other small things to finish off the exterior. Looking at spending between $1500 and $2000 for all this.

After that, it is then interior, paint, then after all that the modifications that I want done to make her a better car.

Is $20,K too much? on top of the original purchase price in 1988 of $5K. Whew...it's all about what makes you happy. God and I both know I'll probably never get that back, but that dosen't mean my grandson won't one day.

It was nearly perfect when I bought it and remains so today. I'd venture to say it's one of the sweetest 2+2 cars around.Thats my 2 cents.

My 71 I picked up for $1000 Plus trade of a 91 240sx I built up. Got it a year ago and only drove it 5 times before I tore it aprat. Almost done now. After I got it I found some nasty rail and floor damage and weak compresion on 2 cylinders. Engine is totally rebuilt sitting in the garage and floor pans and rails are being removed and relaced as I write this.. The list of upgrades and performance add ons goes on and on. I or my wife want to figure out the total I have in this one. I have a 90 300zx that I have redone over the past 2 years also, just needs paint. I bought that on for $5000 6 years ago and probobly have invested $5000 in the motor alone.

paid $5000 in Sept of 2005.

came with a spare engine, trans and 5 boxes of misc parts.

thought i overpaid, but PO did the body and new paint (not great but enough to buy me time). i don't know bodywork and figured i would spend all my time and money on the mechanicals which i can handle.

plus the fact the only Z's i could find on the east coast were crappy rust buckets.

i've got some rust issues but so far a fairly solid base to start from.
