72 on ebay

That car has been mentioned here in a different thread, IIRC. It appears to be a decent start, but needs to be thoroughly inspected to verify the condition of the bodyshell. Add in the fact that it has been sitting un-used and not maintained for 19 years, and so it will quite possibly need a complete drivetrain overhaul as well. Put this together and the opening bid seems high to me, let alone whatever they have decided upon as their reserve.

But as we've seen lately elsewhere on eBay, that doesn't mean someone won't bid it up anyway.

And I hope it continues that way!:nervous: I am bidding on this car, as I have said before I am not highly motivated to purchase right now but if the price is right I would love to have another Z for a father son project. JLP

I agree, without eyes on inspection it is hard to know what this car is worth.:ermm: I am concerned about the reserve, in my attempts to communicate with the seller I get the feeling that he thinks the car is very valuable. The car is already close to the max I would like to pay. In my experience a car sitting this long without preventive maintenance can suffer major drive line damage. But I live in the rust belt and it may not suffer the same in that climate. We will see tomorrow! JLP

Jerry, is the primary thing you're interested in a rust-free shell? How important to the father/son project is matching numbers? I can keep my eyes open for something out here for you if you'd like. 'Cuz I'll bet this one either won't make reserve, or goes higher than you'll want to pay.

This stinks. A car that I know is far inferior to mine is getting bids on it higher than I got on mine. A guess a good thing is that most of the bidders have no feedback. I hope it sells, then that will determine weather I will put mine back on the block again.

Chuck, I gotta admit that I was very surprised at the lack of bids on yours last time. I fully expected it to go for a lot more than the bids you got. Is the link to your previous auction still good? I'd like to look at it for search engine issues. Can you post it or PM me with it?

I can't decide which astonishes me more - the fact that there were 2 different people willing to bid $12k for that car, or the fact that the reserve was still higher yet!?!?

There sure have been a lot of 240Zs on eBay exceeding our expectations lately.

I'm almost beginning to wonder if all the hype in these magazines and collectors guides is starting to kick in. You know, all the listings that tout the 240Z as one of the future hot collectibles. Because the cars that sell for more than we think is reasonable all have one thing in common, they are all mostly stock. The modified cars - even if just mildly so - aren't bringing the big bucks. But the matching numbers cars, even ones that need help, are drawing bids far above what many of us think is reasonable.

Hmm. Since I'm more interested in driving a 240Z than collecting or showing it, maybe I should finish my yellow car as a driver after all, and then sell the red car? I might be able to make a tidy sum on it, the way things are going on eBay lately.
