Need help with e-Brake

my 83 280zx e-brake sticks. I need to fix it to pass inspection. It is the driver side rear cable that will not spring back. I have lubed it and played with it, it is much looser now, but the spring just does not have enough left in it to get it to spring back (but doesn't take much). A new rear cable would be over 150$ and I just want to pass this stupid inspection. Any suggestions?? Any help? Anyone have a rear cable for sale?? Thanks

Steven

try looking in the junk yards. my z31 had the same problem. I took that cable out ran penetrating oil through, gasoline, diesel worked it back and forth couldn't free it up enough for the spring to pull it back. It appeared that it got full of mud somehow and I just couldn't work it out. Spent 8 hours on it. Cable looked perfect. Went to the junkyard got one that looked awful but was free and easy - $5. problem solved.

I have spent a few hours on it my self working it back and forth, it has become easier to move, but just not loose enough. From what I can tell, there is a rubber casing in the inside of the cable that holds the lubricant (maybe) and the rubber casing is all bunched up so the cable cannot spring back open! Thanks for the help, I have been checking around but am unsuccessful in finding a junkyard replacement (mainly because the 2+2 cable is different, and thats all that I can find)

Thanks again

My suggestion would be to find a friendly shop-I just had my safety inspection renewed in less than five minutes at the shop I regularly use.

It went something like this:

Hand over registration slip.

Tech: "mileage?"

Me: "I dunno, speedo doesn't work. Shall I guess?"

Tech: "Sure."

Me: "77,000 sound ok?"

Tech: "How about 77,265?"

Tech types on the system, installs new sticker, and I pay $9.85. Done.

So, moral of the story-find a friendly shop.

I totally agree with finding a friendly shop... I actually just moved recently, so I did not know of a good shop to take it too... I know now where not to take it :) I did get it fixed tho, thanks guys! It was the interior of the cable, so I had to replace it. Appreciate it
