BRE 510 on Ebay ?

Hey, I paid 9 grand for my rust bucket (true, with lots of go fast goodies) - This car looks pretty good to me. That fact that it was a prototype offered to Nissan to propose a BRE promotional package adds alot. However, it would have added even more if the paint laid down by the Painter had not been disturbed.

I've had a good long look at my "iron oxide special" over the last few weeks as I've nutted and bolted for my up coming long ride. Whew, amazing how much you find after you buy the advertised "Rust Free Car". I shook my head and said "If I wrap it around a tree this April, I'll find me a nice shell, paint it then swap over all the goodies".

Personally, I think that this thread actually increases the value of the car.

Not as a "car" you understand...

But as a historical artifact. It has opened a window into the past, and exposed dirty laundry and bad blood that most of us never knew existed.

I don't know any of the people involved, and have no basis to trust or distrust any of them. But I sincerely hope that whoever buys this car finds this tread, prints it out, and preserves it. This is special, in spite of the obvious pain for those involved.

The car sold for $13,000! WOW!

The aution had at least 22 bids this morning. Looked like a 3 way battle for the car. Sure hope they enjoy it. I personally thought it was pretty cool and maybe they had more detail on the upgrades. I have seen a few 510s here locally that I would give that kind of money for. But only a handful.

Hi Guys:

I just received my copy of NISSAN SPORT...

David Muramoto reports on his interview with Mr. Brock... at last falls SCCA Run-Off's...

"Brock remains a keen observer of both Nissan's commercial and motorsports activities. As one who convinced corporate marketing of the value in offering a Red/White/Blue "BRE" edition back in the day, to coordinate with his racing success, Brock was equally convinced Nissan Motorsports was getting excellent promotional value out of supporting grassroots events like the Runoff's"

I am amazed that Mr. Brock specifically mentioned the car that is the subject of this thread last fall at the Runoff's - then when ask about it this month - he commented to Ron only on the person selling what was reported to be "the car" ... and no real comment on the car nor its concept to begin with.

I find this very interesting to say the least.... At any rate the new owner will now have Mr. Brocks words to support the fact that BRE did at least propose marketing a BRE Edition 510.... along with what would appear to be some of the original sketches supporting that from the seller.....

Amazing turn of events... and now a bit more history is added to the knowledge pool....

FWIW,

Carl B.

Carl,

Am I missing something here? I don't see anything particularly earth-shattering in Mr Brock's quote. I thought the story around the car ( despite the vendor's hyperbole ) was pretty much understood and documented anyway?

What made me cringe in the original auction description was the vendor's insistence on comparing the car to one of BRE's race cars - which surely anybody who knows anything about proper race cars would see through in an instant. BRE-linked it might have been, but comparing this jazzed-up standard road car to a fully race-prepped BRE team car is just ridiculous.

By the way, the David Muramoto quote on Brock ".....As one who convinced corporate marketing of the value in offering a Red/White/Blue "BRE" edition back in the day....." adds to the dis-information on the subject in my opinion. Brock clearly didn't manage to convince Nissan USA's corporate marketing dept, or this car would have been one of many - would it not?

Thanks Alan,

We know that Datsun looked at this "concept". But that concept car could not be compared to a BRE race vehicle and was badly represented in my mind.

A quick look at the Datsun "How to" book shows pictures of another concept car that was similar to the car sold on eBay. So, we knew they existed, but they are nothing more than a marketing concept, and not a race prepped car sold by BRE.

I did not get the impression that he was attempting to sell a BRE race car, but a promotional car that for the consumer with all the BRE markings, and apparently the concept was to allow the consumer to mod the car with BRE parts, etc... His claim that it was built by BRE seems odd, why would BRE have time to build what could be done by any mod shop with the correct parts and plaques? Wouldn't that make it a rather expensive special edition? Maybe I'm just not reading this stuff correctly.

Hope to see yall at the Z Convention at Daytona. Yes if all goes at planned I will finally attend my first convention. It goes to the paint shop within the next month or so, if I don't get tripped up somehow again. Cross your fingers and wish me well.
