twsutt Posted March 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2007 Does anyone know where a spare tire cover can be purchased - or have a spare one (no pun intended) laying around that they would be willing to part with? Or better yet, can someone post pics and dimensions so that I can simply cut a new one from fiber board. Any diagram/drawing format will be fine with me : Adobe Acrobat, AutoCAD, MicroStation, PhotoShop, sketch on a napkin, etc...I have a '75 280z and I imagine that the spare tire cover should be the same for all full size spare equipped S30's - I could, however, be wrong about that. Thanks,
280z1975 Posted March 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 30, 2007 If you want to make your own, just measure the width of the spare tire well (go from the edge of the slight indent to the furtherest edge of the slight indent as this is where your spare tire cover went. I made my own out of fiberboard from Home Depot ... if you only posted this a month and a half ago I could have sent you mine (be it from Canada) or had it been a year ago, you could have driven to my Katy area home and picked it up.Just measure twice, cut once and if need be, make it bigger than needed and keep trimming. webdawg1 Posted March 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2007 Here's a picture of a spare tire cover for a 75 280Z. I'll see if I can dig it out of the garage here in just a little bit and get some measurements for you... webdawg1
twsutt Posted April 2, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted April 2, 2007 Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I can work it out from what you've given me.One question - it's been years (18 long Z-less years) since I had a Z and I think that I recall there being some kind of plastic "L" brackets on the bottom side to keep the cover in place. Am I remembering correctly?
TomoHawk Posted April 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted April 2, 2007 Webdawg1-What's the diameter of that cover you have? When I got my '78 280Z, there wasn't anything like that under the luggage lid. There was only the mini-spare, with the T-bolt sticking up, the jack, and the tools.Do you have a picture of the spare with the cover on it?thxZ
BD240Z Posted April 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted April 2, 2007 Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Am I remembering correctly? On my 1970 240Z, I have the same spare-tire cover and it's held in place with three small strips of velcro. On the 1978 I had, it was hinged and had two locking handles.Bruce
twsutt Posted April 2, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted April 2, 2007 Tomo,The only thing that's covering my spare ('75 - full size spare) is the carpet in the rear deck. If I had an old, worn out spare cover I wouldn't need to ask the question in the first place. I owned a '77 back in '87-'89 and an '81 in '89-'91 and I only needed to change a flat once while owning those vehicles. And I've managed to drink away a few memory cells since then. The Z that I have now has only been mine since Christmas and it needs some refreshing.
jerbear Posted April 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted April 2, 2007 I have access to a cnc machine at work. If someone posts a good drawing that I can import into photoshop or autocad I can cut them all day long. I would only need to be reimbursed for the lumber. Please only ask for personal use. I would do this for board members, but not so people can sell them on ebay. Let me know.:pirate:
webdawg1 Posted April 2, 2007 Share #9 Posted April 2, 2007 Tomo,I'm showing 27 3/4" wide x 26 1/2" tall. (Measured from the flat area to the 12:00 o'clock position) Has three holes for your fingers to go into to pick it up. Holes measure 1 5/8" tall x 3" long. Also has approx. 15-20 flat head rivets holding it together. At one point it had velcro holding it down at three points on the bottom.Don't have much in the way of pictures. Need to see about getting one (A digital camera) here pretty soon...webdawg1
MikeW Posted April 2, 2007 Share #10 Posted April 2, 2007 My 1972 cover is just the board: no plastic clips or velcro or anything else. There are no holes or marks indicating that I'm missing anything. My measurements are slightly different than those above. Start with a 1/4" board and make a 27.5" circle. Give it an 11" flat spot. Make 3 hand holds 120 degrees apart that are 7" from the center. Each hand hold is a rectangle 1 1/8" x 2 1/8" with a half circle cut out at each end. Hopefully the attached picture will make this description make sense ...
