Smoking...

I bought a 76 280 that had been sitting for a while, When I went and looked at it I got it to run but with a miss. When I went to drag it home it ran worse. So after I got it home the next day I did a compresson test it has 130psi with one cylc at 135psi I put some old plugs I had laying around re-checked the firing order and plug wires and cap and rotor.

When I started it ran on all 6 but the smoke was really bad when I drove it down the street. Now this could be from sitting for such a long time.

Today I put my vacume gauge on the the motor and it held steady at 15 for this Alt. that is not bad.

My thinking is the oil is coming from old valve seals. The exhaust does not smell like old gas like it did when I first looked it.

I wish I had a leak down tester.

So anybody have any thoughts as to the smoke? Heck if your in Denver stop by and take a look..LOL

Thanks

Eric

Sure, drain the oil and filter and use some good 10w-30. If the brakes are ok and the tires are safe. Just drive the car arround a bit the rings may be in need of use. Hopefully. Watch to see she dosn't over heat. After you have driven the car some , like for a few days, re-test the compression. then squirt some oil in each plug hole and retest . If it is rings the compression will increase with the addition of the oil. If you have the time before you drive the Z like I said ealier, put some ATF in the cylinders. It is a 5w oil that is highly detergent oil and it may help if there is a sticky ring situation. Let it soak overnight. Then do as above. this is what I would do . Gary

Good idea Gary

The first time I ran it down the block I could not see behind me because of the smoke..LOL. I ran it today I'm not sure if it was any better but that was not very far or for very long.

I need to find a place where I can let it run for while before it gets on the road for very long. In the mean time I'll put some ATF in the holes and flush the engine before I change the oil.

In case this all fails I have a N-42 head that I'm thinking real hard about putting on....

Thank you Beandip
