Great project! As far as I know, there is no source for these. I know a lot of us need these.

Unfortuantely, I don't know what they are made of either. Like Carl and Beandip said, it's probably some type of oil resistant rubber, maybe synthetic.

Do you really think they had synthetic rubbers in the late 1960s or 1970s Japan? With the quality of the insulation on the wiring, and the other rubber parts on the car that are now crumbling, things point to NO.

It probably would be a good idea to find out what kind of material things like boots or modern rubber car things are made of. You may even be surprised to find out that they're made of soy-based rubber even. :D
