I wish someone can make a replica of this, rubber grommet for the early boot. If we can have this , we can have a replica early boot easily.

There are similar shaped parts that are used on floor carpets on modern cars.  Not sure if you can find one similar but here is a Toyota  example:

 

 

I'll keep an eye out in hardware stores here.   1" top diameter and 1/2" shaft diameter.

 

 

Which style do you mostly like ?

Can I say I am doing my original style for the shift boot ? 

My favorite is ‘ grommet on top ‘ style.

But I checked various pictures in brochures and old magazines, there are different kind of style.

Here is a rubber grommet that looks like it will work:

 

25mm diameter

12.5mm hole

Some car rubber detailer fluid will make it black and shiny.

Please see the picture , the left boot was a replica at the time Z432 restoration, I feel something different when I saw it. Now I got it, it has a grommet which came from a store!

I was asked which one do you want to put in your Z432, I said the right one please! 

I want exact shape and look......

Hi Kats,

Before I found my NOS shift boot shown below, I too was trying to find

the correct grommet in order to make a good reproduction boot.

You may want to contact Nix at www.240zrubberparts.com to see if 

he could make this grommet.  I would think that a well reproduced

early shift boot would be very popular.

can you give the height of each section? 

I've got two originals I could send you. One is softer than the other. I guess one hardened over time. The overall height is the same but one has a bigger gap than the other.

Hi Kats, that photo is from HS30 00004, I have not seen the grommet top part of the boot on an AU market car. I have to say it's also my favorite style. I have attached a photo of the boot from HS30 00150 which I assumed was just missing the grommet, but now that I see the photo of HS30 00004's in more detail I'm inclined to think maybe it never came with that grommet?

Mike, I used to have a 16 track reel-to-reel machine and for cleaning the rubber on the pinch roller, Tascam sold lacquer thinner.  It softened the rubber while cleaning the iron oxide particles from its surface.

A rub with some lacquer thinner may help soften the grommet.

I tried this (lacquer thinner) with a rock-hard side window bumper (the one that sits at the bottom-rear of the door).  It worked beautifully and I thought that I'd finally discovered the secret to rejuvenating all of the aging rubber parts on my car .  Sadly, after 24 hours I found that the rubber had returned to its original, rock-hard state.

I've tried three different 'rubber and vinyl restoration' products to date and none of them have been effective in softening hardened rubber (or vinyl).
