Looking through my records for the 78, I see a low of 19.09 and a high of 27.

49. It's basically stock other than a 83 5speed, Accel coil, front air dam, rear spoiler, and a cold air intake. The 810 (completely stock) shows a low of 18.21 and a high of 24.13 but it never did do as well as the Z mileage wise.

Trip mileage (NM - NC before 55 mph speed limit) in 70s on box stock 71 4sp -- 25. Same car, same & similar trips after tweaks -- 29-30. Tweaks were: 1) added A/C, BRE chin spoiler, fan shroud.; 2) vac. advance rebuilt to start a 5 in. vacuum instead of 10 & timing set at 11 degrees initial advance instead of 5; 3) Mulholland 2.5 in. exhaust w. stock manifold, mainifold air injector tubes cut back to 1/4 in. projection into ports. Saw chin spoiler/fan shroud & exhaust mods add 1 mpg each when installed.

Day trip mileage in NC in a '72 w. 4 sp & same tweaks (but w/o fan shroud, with 71 spec N-27 needles in SU's), in mid 70's and 80's was about 1 mpg better.

In town mileage was sensitive to conditions, 18-20 in Blue Ridge foothills (small town, short trips) to 24-25 commuting in suburban Houston.

Knew an owner who got 28 in the 70's on day trips in his slightly tweaked 4 sp 72, 32 after putting in a 5 sp & keeping the stock 3.36 read end.

Have another tweaked 72 now, but don't drive it as much & haven't checked mileage. Spark advance tweaks still work w. 93 octane gas (mileage improvement more than offsets higher price), and plugs, valves, and SU's stay cleaner with the lead gone & better detergents.

Depending on the temperature I have done as good as 23mpg and as bad as 16. It will ususally be somewhere in there. It wouldn't be so bad if the car didn't demand premium. It used to be my daily driver, but I can't afford it right now and drive my Geo. Either way, 16-23 is MUCH better than the 6mpg it got the first time I drove it.

I'd like to hear what rear end ratios folks have in the cars described. My 71 has a 3.9 rear end, but a four speed, not five. I get 23-24 MPG on the road. I dont drive it in town. My 79 ZX has the 3.9 rear as well, but a five speed. It gets about 17 in town, 21-22 on the road.

Both cars are mostly stock, the 240 Z has a header, but still running points.

when i bought the 76 280z i made the mistake of asking what kind of milage he was getting in the car (kinda wanted to know since i had a 1500mile drive home in it). He said in town about 9mpg but on the highway i should be able to get 18 or so...LOL

On my trip home I got about 20-23 (lower in the mountains) which I thought was phenominal for the car considering the big cam etc etc it has

I did a 95mile drive yesterday to a friends place (round trip) and I used about 3/8tank. Shitty deal was that i was in a 50mph zone following people doing 50... I can't shift it into 5th at 50 as the car resonates TOO much and the RPM's are too low IMO for the gear (a hair over 2000) so I was in 4th for a lot longer than I liked.

My usual cruising speeds on the highways around here is 70-75 (ok sometimes 80) and I usually can get 150-175miles to the top half IIRC.

For a 31y/o car with a mod'd engine I can't complain as I don't drive it like a granny either... I bought it to drive it hard like the sports car it is :) when it broke, i fixed it and continue to go at it!

15 MPGs in a stock Automatic. I thought it was bad until I read this thread...now I KNOW it is bad. My car is running super rich. It does not help that the car only has a 3 speed automatic....and no I am not going to drop in a 5spd even thought I have one sitting around.

I just calculated my mileage for last week, and it was about 18 mpg for mixed driving, both highway and city.

I feel pretty good about that, considering my leaky injectors, bad u-joints and low tranny and diff fluid levels... which hopefully are all getting corrected in the next month.

Why are all of our Z running rich? Kharma is, too. Considering that my spedometer doesn't work, my numbers might be a little off. But she's getting roughtly 15 in town and 18-20ish in the highway. She's not my daily driver but I can't keep my hands off her long enough not to take her to work every once in a while. Nevertheless, gas milage is pretty bad. I'm used to driving my neon to work and I have noticed a HUGE difference. And the neon's even got a bad o2 sensor. I don't blame a car that's eleven years older myself, though.
