Quarter window frame removal

Wazzup Z Heads...!

I'm back into my resto, more details to follow (let's just say life happens)...paint's almost done now starting to get parts together for the reassembly.

I need to take out the quarter windows from the frames for tinting and can't get a start on it. There's only 1 screw I see that holds the frame together but it's not budging for me. I have the hatch window out and figured with the windows out it might be easier to tint. OR is it better/easier to tint the windows inplace? I don't want to ruin the tint film during reassembly...

I found that it was futile trying to unscrew any of the factory fasteners in the 1/4 window frames.

On a '73 240Z there are 8 pan head screws: -

4 down the door jamb section, 4 under the curved section that forms the base of the frame.

Get to them with the tip of a die grinder or drill and take their heads off:devious:

Once you get the frame to spring apart, you can then inspect the brackets & remains of the fasteners.

I made a new corner brackets for the door jamb corner, the lowest point since the originals were well past it.

Just bend some up out of some flat of the appropriate dimension, drill and thread to suit.

Make sure they are rustproofed, moisture does get in there as you may already know:angry:

Use either stainless or zinc plated metric screws to re-assemble.

I agree with tinting the glass out of the frames, good move.

I removed all the glass in my '73 and replaced all the rubber, after painting. I recommend using some Kroil or PB blaster. and lit it soak over night before attempting there removal . Be vary careful with the frame when you separate the it to remove the glass. If your rubber that is installed now is in good shape and not brittle . You think of just taking the whole assembly in and have the tint installed. Of course having the glass out will be a better job. As long as the frame doesnt come apart. I replaced the mounting screws with stainless . Be careful when you remove the glass from the frame , spread it only as much as necessary .

Thanks everyone as always for the timely on point posts. I didn't have any problems removing the small screws that held in the frame but talk about a weak design point. Why did they use such small screws, anyone know the spec on those? That whole area is held together in a funky way, I try not to think about how "strong" it is. So the frame will come apart? I have new rubber inserts I'd like to get in there and well as the seals for the body...

The frame dissassembles into two major parts(unless there are issues) and a trim or two.

Most Z parts suppliers have all of the seals and weatherstrips necessary, I bought mine from VB(Black Dragon), I'll see aboutr having them in the pics too.

PS, I replaced all of the screws with stainless(frame and body). I have an extra set I'll sell for cost plus shipping-I'll get them in the pics too.

Thanks for the effort man, I'll take you up on the screw set, as I recall some of the heads were mashed in the removal and would have to replace them anyway.

Here is a basic set of pictures,

There are four phillips screws holding the frame together-two panhead and two flats.

The glass simply slides into the frame seal-no sealant needed.

Sealant/adhesive is used to glue the outer seals on to the frame-I can photograph those if you need it-I can take one of the ones I restored apart and lay it out as put together, if these don't get it!

I never knew it would be so hard to take a picture of screws!!!

Hey Will,

Thanks SO much for posting these pics...I see what I was missing, my problem is two fold. I didn't realize there were two screws under the seal in the back corner and the screws are frozen in the frame from water corrosion. I'm gonna have to put some Liquid Wrench on the screws to loosen them up. I'm about to head over to the tinter to finalize the estimate and get the hatch window done. I'll be contacting you on the screw set, you have enough for both sides? Thanks again man...
