Keep the defroster grid?

I'm tinting the hatch and rear quarter windows. The tint guy needs to scrape the defroster grid because it's rusty. Living in SoCal rear hatch window fogging is not a common thing. If I do remove it, I'll have to remove/replace the tint if I ever want something like it back...any sources for modern defroster grid replacements...?

ZSpecialties has a neato fan thing that plugs into the defroster wiring, and they say it works reat. You might want to look into that.

If you look enough, you can still get aftermarket defroster griid things that you stick onto the window. It doesn't look as pretty as the oem one, but I had one before and they work just as well.

I have tinted over them several times-I think you may have the wrong guy tinting your windows...

All that has to happen is they need to be cleaned. The tint on my red 240Z has been on 10 years, right on top of the defroster(which does work)-no bubbles...

Maybe the tinter guy wanted to remove the grid wires so they don't pull off when the tint comes off ( if ever) or maybe he thinks the heat (what heat?) might melt the tinting and look funny.

I was able to get almost all the tinting off my window, but some of it is still sticking on the grid wires. Pulling it off bit by bit is crazy, and the local tinter guy said I should just crape EVERYTHING off the glass. Any ideas? Ammonia & a cold/dark garage?

His point was that they were rusted and would affect the adhesion of the tint...I'll talk with him today...I'd like to keep them on as a stock feature of the car, it doesn't work but it was never a priority to get fixed. I have tint over a grid on on another car and it's held up well over 10 years...

I didn't think that defroster grid lines could drust. They look like copper strips coated with some ceramic paint stuff. Even then, they are so thin, the tinting should stick. What if you painted the lines with something to promote the tinting to stick well?

BTW, my tint guy kept the grid on, he was just thrown off by the amount of storage crud that had accumulated on the window...

Do you think that defroster kit would work with the stock Z wiring? There's no timer on a Z, and the voltage to the grid might be a little less than 12V (11.7V), so it's hard to tell from the sescription. There was little information on power, except it said 8 - 16A @ 12V. It seems like a better product than the last one I found.

When I was thinking about this for my Z, I would have used theirs switching/timer as an override to the stock switch. You might drop them a line and tell them what you have in mind. If you're defroster grid circuit is working they might be able to mod up for you to use with it...good luck with it...

I got a reply to my email question to him, and he said that even at 11.8 Volts, it should work, and his emphasis was on the current consumption of up to about 15 Amps.
