Ready for the show!

Boy, talk about some sharp eyes! I always thought the bumper guards looked funny, and even asked the PO the same question. He told me they were like that when he bought it from the original owner in 80' so I left it at that. The battery is "correct", somewhere along the line the battery cables were replaced and somehow, the red is the ground and the black is the hot. It is on my (small) list of things the fix. I have no plans to competitively show this car. I enjoy driving it too much and hate cleaning it plus I do not need anyone "nitpicking" my car and telling me "oh, I'll have to take a point off because you have incorrect hose clamps" sheesh! I'm just trying to keep it as a clean example of a 240z without going into a full on restoration....

...And nobody has commented that the carbs are not original. I was kinda expecting that one to be the first comment. Without running on too much, the PO told me he replaced those in 85' or 86' with what he told me were one of the last sets of factory new SU left.

Carbs first - these days I consider round-tops on a '73 as pretty standard, unless the car is a trailer queen. For a driver, I didn't figure it was worth a comment.

I wouldn't worry about things like the color of the ground wire, or that kind of stuff. It doesn't matter. First time I took my yellow 240Z out in public, I attended a small show-n-shine of local Z enthusiasts (240-350 inclusive). When the owner of a beautiful show-quality V8 conversion asked which car was mine, I pointed it out and apologized for its shabby, rusty appearance. His comment was, "So what? It's a 240Z, and it runs, drives and is still on the road. That's more than can be said for most of them." I took that to heart. Yours is far better than that, so don't feel the need to apologize.

Should be really easy to swap those bumper guards from side to side before the show. Have fun, and take pictures!

You know, the first time I went to a show I to was kinda worried about the state of my car. The paint is new, but there are some flaws where I had either water or oil get into the spray line and it caused a wrinkle effect (luckily it's only easily seen in one spot). My engine bay is a mess and still the original blue (on the next winter project list). It was far from where I wanted it to be ...

Still I went and people were super friendly and no one cared that my paint was messed up, they were all like, "Looks good for your first time painting". I really liked how friendly the Z crowd was. It was a really good time.

Oh yea, that is one SUPER nice car ... puts mine to shame (for the moment :lick: ) ... I to am like you, will never enter my car in a show, just drive it and love it and keep it looking good.

Mark,

In the case of your battery, I really don’t think it’s a nitpicking issue but rather a safety issue. There is good reason why positive cables are red and negative cables black or some other color besides red. Now you may know and are aware of the fact that the cables are reversed but should someone else, a friend, mechanic, starts having to mess with the battery I can pretty much assure you they will not look down and search for the itty bitty + or – symbol on the battery. Rather, they will see red and assume positive and they will clamp the positive there and you might then have more than an itty-bitty problem. It’s a simple fix and it gives you a chance to not only clean the ground but also get a decent size ground wire to the firewall.
