Posted April 16, 200717 yr comment_206129 I was poking around below the ignition coil today and saw the pictured hose/valve/regulator and cant figure out what the heck it is. It connects to metal tubing that runs up from under the car but seems to terminate in a loop. I cant help but want to take it apart and clean it up but before I do so I should know what it is.... Anyone know? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/23976-what-is-this-thing/ Share on other sites
April 16, 200717 yr comment_206130 Looks to be the "valve" for the vapor recovery system that has obviously been disconnected.Mark Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/23976-what-is-this-thing/#findComment-206130 Share on other sites
April 16, 200717 yr comment_206137 Flow guide valve. IIRC the bottom hose goes to the tube on the engine block and the top one goes to the air cleaner. The long one is probably still hooked up to your expansion tank. April 16, 200717 yr comment_206140 What this is a one way valve that allows fresh air back into the fuel tank as the fuel is pumped out. If there is expansion in the fuel tank, like on a hot day the pressure is relieved and the fumes are vented into the engine block. It looks like the PO has made it inoperable by looping the hose from one port to the other. Do you know if the evaporative tank is still in use ? If you are unaware of this tank. It is located to the rear of the passenger side rear wheel in back of the plastic trim panel . There are several hoses involved with this system and many of us have removed all of this. You still need to keep the fresh air vent line though. There has been many posts and threads on this . Do a search and you should be able to learn all about it. April 16, 200717 yr Author comment_206142 It looks like the PO has made it inoperable by looping the hose from one port to the other. So if I wanted to make it operable again where would I re-route the hoses (or does it matter/do I want to)?thanks.. April 16, 200717 yr comment_206149 To hook it up correctly, one hose goes to the back side of the air box, the other to the small nipple on the block breather tube (under the distributor). It does matter which goes where, but I'm out of town tonight and don't have my FSM with me. I do have the 240Z though (Road Trip!), and will try to verify which way tomorrow in the daylight. I just got back from one today and am off to Tucson tomorrow with my Dad (aka mechanic) to see the Pima Air Museum. If anyone knows which connects where and even has a picture from a manual I'd be grateful. April 16, 200717 yr comment_206153 look at post #3 he laid it out for you. The valve has letters marking each port. sblake posted what you need. You should also have a look to see if the evap tank is still there and is connected . April 16, 200717 yr comment_206157 Arne - sounds like a fun road trip.Well.... Not so much. I'm attending a 4-day class followed by a 4 hour exam for work. Good parts are that I got to drive the Z, and since the class is in Portland, I'm almost certain to hook up with Z friends up here. (Gary, I do have the puller in the car.)Stephen is correct, While I went out and looked he posted ahead of me. The top one goes to a small nipple in the back side of the air box, between the carbs and below the large fitting for the air pump hose. The lower one goes to a small nipple that tees off the big block breather.
