Buyers Guide?

Hello, newbe here. I have searched the site for a "buyers guide" but to no avail.

A customer of mine has a '72 240z that has been stuffed in a garage for 15 years that I am going to look at after work today and I beleive I can get it very cheap if not free. Automatic trans problems when parked years ago, got it ignored. I had just a glimpse of it the other day and it looks to be in very nice shape and the odo reads 73K or 93k, I couldn't tell through all the dust on the windows.

Anyhow, Is there a "buyers guide" for 240z's ? ie...

-places to look for rust

-more desireable model/engine

-electrical/mechanical peculiars

-parts availability

Roy - Rust areas to look for are: floor pans, frame rails, battery tray, rocker panels, dog-legs, lower fender skirts...etc especially if the car saw winters in the salt belt. Most desireable model/engine is personal (240, 260, 280). Electrical / mechanical particulars - everything you should expect for a 30+ year old car....especially one that has been sitting for a long time. Parts availability is what I consider good but some speciality parts are disappearing...many years parts are inter-changeable, but it's not like the american pony car market...nor are the prices.

Replacing the automatic with a manual is not a horrendous undertaking, if you are mechanically inclined.

Hello welcome to the club :)

LOTS of JDM (Japaness Domestic Market) only parts also. Such as the Fairlady Z fender emblems, 10 and 11,000 RPM Tachometers from the Fairlady Z432 and 240ZG, Fender Flares, etc etc....

Lots of Great OEM and after market options for parts, body kits and stuff along with a Proven race history in Japan, Europe and the US :)

Go to Zpoint.com and check out the Rally footage.

Click on The Works rally cars and scroll threw the options and watch all the movies starting with the 1972 RAC Rally, 1971 EAS (East African Safari) Rally then the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally.

Don't forget to click the arrow on bottom right of the movie screen to watch the fullview size, you'll see what these cars can really do!

I remember my neighbor had a custom 280zx with "turbo whine" and I thought it was sweet and fast! So when I found this one so cheap I got excited. Suposedly it runs but transmission slips. Sitting since ???? has '93 plates. It does have rust starting on the drivers rear fender lip and some small paint bubbles on the drivers dogleg:( Yep, spent it's life in the "salt belt", but very strait and complete from what I can tell. Will get a better look at it after work and damn if I didn't forget my camera.

I have restored a couple of vw bugs and buses and realize the perils of unibody construction and the 100's of spot welds I will have to drill out to fix this z properly. From what I can tell this 240z corectly restored could be worth $6-8k. So it will be more of a "fun maker" than a potential "money maker".

Anyhow, I will probably aquire it, make it run and drive it occasionally until I have time for a full resto. Pics as soon as possible.
