Side Mirror Removal - Replacement

The driver's side sits at 22 degrees and 2.5 inches from the window( at the narrow end of the mirror face) and at 31 degrees and 3 inches from the passenger side. You need to be looking at both to really see this. So the question is "why hasn't anyone taken a JDM right side mirror and put it on a US import 240 left door to see how it fit/looked?".

Because the matching part does not exist!

I have four or five threads and countless hours going round and round with Nissan parts depots throughout the world to find out Nissan never made a true "mirror image" of our DS mirror-That is why I have made and cast my own base, and cut my own convex glass to fit the head! I will have several complete true PS assys with me at Daytona-they are not OEM but the only way you will know that is from my telling you-or a complete and exhaustive search through all of the parts books(domestic and otherwise) and talking to anybody in Nissan who would reply-I have been there and done that, no need to duplicate my efforts!

I have four spoken for and will be bringing how ever many more I can get made(cutting and fitting the glass takes time) between the time I finish my car and I get to Daytona...

So I've got the door panel off on the passenger side, and what I need to know is this....do I have to disassemble the door and/or remove the glass in order to be able to reach the bolt head that's holding the mirror on from the inside?

Is there an easy way to do this, or should I just start tearing things apart?

The "easy" way to do it - is to just remove the side window glass.

If you have a Snap-On type "wobble" extension, and if you grind down a longer socket, such that it fits over the threaded stud to reach the nut, but is still short enough to fit in the covered area.. it is possible to remove/install the mirror with the side glass in place.

Best advice - just pull the glass and be done with it.

Ah, so Nissan never bothered to make a LH driver side mirror. They just put the RHD JDM mirror on the other side and rotated the mirror. (its like the handbrake thing all over again).

Heres a pic of how the mirror should look on the drivers side - (left of photo, RHD Drivers side). The drivers side mirror is supposed to be angled towards the car, not away from it. So that the mirror sits close to the car.

And on the right of the photo ( LHD drivers side, RHD Passenger side) is what you LHD consider to be normal, when actually, if Nissan hadn't been so slack you would have got a mirror image of the RHD mirror on your drivers side, and then they could have used both left and right mirrors on both LHD and RHD cars, one for each side.

I gotta know, is that a 280 hood on a 240, or 240 turn signals on a 280? The latter seems like a bit too much work for me!Looks good, flares are nice at any angle as well.

And I think I know what I'm gonna do with that extra 240 grille I had laying around, it fills the void right nice....Thanks for your unknowing help.

Neither/sort of...

We never got the 280Z here in Aus, thats a 260z, with a 260z hood (same as your 280z hood - or bonnet as we call them), and 260z turn signals (all our z's 240/260 had that sort of 240z style turn signals).

As for the grill, I read a good how to about extending the stock grill with bits from a spare grill - cant remember where i saw it though.

Here's a mounted picture of the rare/elusive right hand mirror manufactured for two weeks only in November 1969. I was lucky enough to get this one from the Pull-a-Part here in Phoenix on 1/2 price days last week. I paid $1.99, plus tax of course. ROFL

Since I had/have my car torn apart I wanted to try something here. I like the idea of two mirrors, it makes the appearance look more complete, it also gives me a small view of the right side of the car. I realize this deviates from originality so it's definately not for everyone. This isn't perfect either but I got it close enough to satisfy me prior to drilling the mounting holes in the right door. The height/top of the mirror stalk on the right side is 1/4" lower than on the left. I could get it closer but I'd have to cut further into the mirror base and I think I've gone as far as I can.

I took a normal left hand mirror and cut the base in the opposing direction/angle. I made a template from ABS plastic of the angle and used that to gage my progress. I made a rough cut with a dremel and then used a fine metal file to get the final result. It took about two hours to complete the job. I also put a small angle in the mounting stud to assure the mirror would mount correctly.

Someone that has access to a cmm and a cnc mill could get this darn near perfect. Heres a few pictures of the mirrors on the car.
