Will a 280 engine work in a 240?

I have a 72' 240 that I am restoring and I have a 76 280 with a damaged front end. The engine just had a top end overhaul and runs great. I was thinking of taking the 280 to a junk yard after pulling the engine. But I would only do that if the engine could go in the 240 if I ever need to do that.

It is either that or just sell the 280 as is for $ 500.00, which is all I have into it.

Any thoughts on this or anyone want to buy a 280?

If you put the 280 motor in the 240, you'll have to have some exhaust work done. The 280 exhaust manifold is different where the pipes attach.

You might have to install an electric fuel pump in the 240. Unless your 280 head has an opening for the mechanical fuel pump.

I did this swap and it was easy.

It seems like a good idea to pull the engine from the 280 and put it on a shelf for a future project.

Thanks for all the input!

Not knowing if I should start new threads, the answer to one question begats new questions.

1) Do I pull the tranny for the 280 engine?

2) Do I pull naything else while I am at it that I will need?

3) Hate to take the rest of the 280 to the junk yard. Anyone want it?
