justaZcarguy Posted May 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 6, 2007 Ok, please tell me if I am nuts here, I can't see why this won't work... So as some of you know, I have been having issues with fuel down the side of the car on a hard left turn. I called around for a cap, and nothing was avail until next week. So, as I was in Ace Hardware to grab some c-clips, my curiousity got the better of me and I wandered over to the plumbing isle. There I found a waste and overflow washer that is a great replacement for the rubber in the stock cap... It's made of synthetic rubber, it's a bit thicker and provides a better seal than the old one. It fits almost too tight but after a few twists, it adapted down a bit and now while tight, is not impossible to put on. I just took out the old rubber and worked this where it was. The best news is, it was $1.79 verses the cost of a Dealer Replacement cap! I am going to attach pics, but that part number from Ace is 46122, "Waste Overflow washer". Lemme know what you think. And yes, I will deny that there are toilet parts on my Z!
hls30.com Posted May 6, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 6, 2007 That sounds like and could be a great idea! Before you leave this on your car you better make sure it is gasoline resistant!Pour a little gas in a bell jar, put in one of these gaskets, tighten the lid, and let is sit in the shade for a few days...If the gas doesn't change color, and the gasket is not changed....Will

EScanlon Posted May 6, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 6, 2007 If it is indeed "Synthetic Rubber" then it may be one of the newer silicones or even rubber replacements which for the most part ARE fuel resistant. Note the "most part".Will's point is dead on. Put it in a glass jar (so you can see through the sides) with some gas. If no change in either the color of the gas OR the shape and thickness of this part, then it should be (note the SHOULD BE) okay to use.2¢E
BillD Posted May 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 10, 2007 Has any progress been made on testing the fuel resistant status of this "replacement" part? The results could be very useful to a lot of the list members.
justaZcarguy Posted May 10, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted May 10, 2007 I planned on posting the update this morning. So here I am...So far so good!! No signs of deterioration or discoloration, it's been on the car for a few days now and it's a bit of a tight fit, but not impossible to put on. You may have to bend the "tabs" on the cap out slightly, but I have a great seal and no more fuel down the side upon the hard left.I am pretty sure that EScanlon nailed it with the sythetic rubber evaluation. So all in all, not bad for $1.79.Hope this helps some!~Brian
