300zx vs Corolla

Being a Toyota sales person I see a lot of Corollas with many many miles on them I have a customer that has an 03 with 300,000 and all he has done is change the oil. thats not to say there arent some "bad ones" but for the most part the are pretty darn reliable. I sell Hondas to and I have owned 5 Accord I still own 3 an 86 with 146,000 an 89 with 192,000 and a 96 with 124,000 on it and they all run very strong in my opinion you cant go wrong with either one however Corollas are easy to find compared to Z cars what ever year they are. As far as Chevy and Toyota they have done some joint projects in the past like the Geo prism/corolla same car These were built by NUMMI (New united motor manufacturing co) this was a joint Toyota/Cheverolet plant in Ca that only built Toyota products but were rebadged as Chevys/Geos

Keep the Corolla. Toyotas make great daily drivers. So do Hondas. I'm on my 6th or 7th Toyota and keep on upgrading. I haven't killed one yet. I tried Ford once and I'll never make that mistake again.

See that is soooo funny. I have never had ANY luck with Honda or Toyota. In all my cases and most of the family cases they always say "Buy Honda or Toyota", yet if you get into their Honda or Toyota, they are a broken POS.

All the American cars that I got, and have had experiance with, nothing. Run forever and purr like a kitten.

Plus American made vehicles have their own bad apples too. From each company there are definite buys and ones that you don't want to touch. Plus if it is used, you can't always blame the maker, you might need to blame the abuser.

If you buy new these days, anyone is good to buy from. Even Hyundai and Suzuki, both companies which have come a LONG way in the past few years.

To add to that last thread it is also a good time to purchase used american cars because they have put themselves in a position that the resale value is way down because of all the rebates on new. I agree that many manufactures today make quality cars and you pick up domestics well below there value. Toyota did just pass GM in sales so there is a good chance the rebates will stick around for a bit on domestics so as i said its a good time to buy a slightly used one (did i mention i sell used as well LOL)

Corolla = Geo Metro

Negative. The Metro had a 3 cylinder Suzuki Motor, not sure who put the rest of the car together though.

The Geo you're thinking of was the Prizm. Built by Toyota and marketed by GM as the Prizm and Toyota as the Corolla. Geo was just a hodgepodge brand.

Back to the original post...

The Corolla is a no frills automobile that to me is boring and has no personallity. To each their own. A newer Corolla and a Z31 are about as far apart on the car spectrum you can get. The VG motor in the ZX is a strong motor, remember it is also the V6 motor from the trucks, a very tried and proven engine. On the otherhand is has a timing belt so keep that in mind when purchasing a used one. If I was to suggest a car to look at I would have to recommend a 3rd gen Acura Integra. My wife had a 95 2dr RS 5spd, this is the stripped down model... pwr windows but not locks, no cruise, no sunroof, no ABS and hubcaps... We bought it in '01 with 110,000 miles on it for $5500. We sold it in '05 for $2500 w/ 175,000 miles on it. Fun to drive, handles well, EASY to work on when it needed it, great gas mileage, quick and quite frankly I wish we hadn't sold it. As far as work that I did to it over the four years goes , The top of the radiator was plastic and developed a hairline crack $110, replaced the brake master cylinder $55, new struts KYB GR2's for around $250-ish, other than that just regular maintenance. Did I mention It's EASY to work on? Can be had in a four door too and as reliable as any other Honda.

My 2 cents

Nate

Oh hey, didn't see this the first time around... even more info than I had. So I was close but not exact.

A daily driver should be just that - something to drive every day with no worries. That said, mine is a 2002 Lexus GS 300. Reliable, comfortable, solid. Buy something that fits your needs and budget. All carmakers make lemons; some more than others. Foreign or domestic? Who knows what's what anymore. GM and Ford build in Canada. Toyota, Honda and Nissan build in the US. VW builds in Mexico. The global economy had made strange bedfellows and there are more to come. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here and repeat it again: Buy something that fits your needs and budget.

SPOT ON!

my DD is an infiniti I30. since i bought it, i've actually seen fine examples go for ~4000; not too much for a great DD!

but anyway, i must repeat that a DD needs to be comfortable and it needs to suit you. however, i would have NEVER dreamed that i would be cruising around in a 4 doo,r FWD, automatic sedan IN MY LIFE! but it's comfortable.
