Working on Floor Pans

I am continuing my floor pan replacement project. I have cut out the old floor pans. As you can see, the rust was really quite bad. After cutting out the old floor pans I started trying to figure out how to get the pans to fit. I think I am in for quite a job. Looking forward, the front section is also quite bad. I bought some sheet steel from a local supply company to cut out the patch panels for the other portions. Any thoughts comments or guidance is welcome.

What I did on mine was cut out the floor just like you did, and then I cut out sheet metal pieces just bigger than the holes in the floor. Then I put a bead of window sealer caulk around the hole in the floor, set the metal on top, and screwed it in place. Then I fiberglassed around the edges, and grinded the screws tips off of the bottom of the car.

I would put in new floor pans and rails...you have an awful lot sacrificed.

I have a spare set of new rails, and one floor pan...all from Charley Osborne...

Please do not use scrap metal. Please use the correct items for the car. They will keep you more secure and will not rack the car. I have attached pics.

Jimmy - In previous discussions on this we had suggested you get replacement floor pans from either MSA or Charlie Osborne of Zedd Finding. Have you followed thru on this? The replacement pans are obvious in their fitment...although you might have to extend them at the front end with extra sheet metal.

I guess your application would require more than sheet metal like mine... I only had quarter sized holes.

In rereading your post I think maybe you have bought a floor pan kit and are trying to bridge the areas that are still missing from the cut out floor pans.

I would put the floor pans in the hole and then see what you have left-check my gallery for some pics...

Yes, I did buy the pans from Charlie. I will try and post some pictures of the pans in the holes.

The good news: You didn't have to cut out much metal....it had mostly rusted away.

The bad news: The support brace that goes in front of the firewall and just visible in your 2nd photo of the first post...that's missing a section of the metal that goes under the floor pan. Additionally, that much rust in the floor pan would indicate that you need to check out the rocker panels as they may be close to gone also.

The extra sheet metal you bought may come in very handy for the firewall, but the formed pieces available from Charlie Osborne may be far superior to anything else. See if you can get that lower support from him in order to re-strengthen that floor pan.

I went through this project last year. I cut out the old panels and had a shop weld in the new replacement pans from Charlie Osborne. The PO had used fiberglass replacement rocker panels so these got replaced too.The series of attached pictures (in 2 posts) may help show where additional metal was used to tie in the floorpans.

The final pictures should help keep you going. Good luck!
