Will this diff fit?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, i got an offer on a 90-'96 z32 vlsd's w/ axles. 408 gear. for around 500 shipped to CA. I was wondering if

1) This will even fit in my 73 240z

2) If the price is worth it

3) What i will need to make it work.

I have been doing some reading, and haven't found a 90-96 z32 diff with a 408 gear ratio? Was wondering if this is correct or not.

I have read the forums and couldn't find anything. Please do help.

Yes it will, but its alot of work. its acually a 4.11, its the N/A diff. The turbo diff is stronger and is a 3.56. I can get one (N/A rear subframe, meaning everything, brakes, axles, all of it) at my local juck yard for $150. I dont know what shipping would be though. You should be able to find one in CA somewhere! Look/call around! Go on hybridz for instructions and tt.net for a rearend.

The Z32 R200 diffs are monster diffs and probably way heavier than you'd need (or want) anyway. They can't give em away where I am because they're too big to fit in anything easily including skylines (so I'm told). The price seems too much for what it is.

I'm looking into suburu wrx diffs as they are a longnose R180 lsd like a zed, good ratios available too. I think they might be a 5 bolt patern to the driveshafts instead of 4 and either require modification or to use the suburu cv jointed driveshafts (better than uni joints).

I know someone who has done the conversion into a datsun1600 (510) but keep forgetting to ask them about it so I don't know all of the facts yet.

My understanding is that the R160 from the subarus bolts into a 510 or a Z. Once you have the side flanges from another R160 the stock halfshafts from the Z just bolt right up.

The new STi with the R180 is not the same as the R180 in the Datsuns. The spline count on the side gears is different from the normal R180. There was some speculation that the side flanges from the R200 might work because they have the same spline count, but I don't think this has been confirmed yet. If it didn't work, then the next thing to try would be modding the WRX CV shafts to fit in the Z.

Maybe this isn't the best way to get an answer but it seems like my question comes from this older thread. I want an LSD in my "72" and also need/ want to get some shorter gears to fit the 5 speed. I read the hybredz post about different options including the subaru possibilities. The r160 and a fairly stout LSD was written about, suggesting that it was stronger than the open r180. Question; is this statement been tested by anyone ..."My understanding is that the R160 from the subarus bolts into a 510 or a Z. Once you have the side flanges from another R160 the stock halfshafts from the Z just bolt right up."...I only question the flanges bolting up, and whether the subaru LSD is strong enough or is it the ring and pinion that would be in question? Or am I trying to re-invent the wheel and there is a simpler answer I'm missing. thanks

If nobody gives you an answer on the bolt in axles ask on a 510 forum. Those guys use the Subaru diffs all the time, since they came with R160s. I think the diff is strong enough, based on Gary Savage's experience flogging his VG30T in his 510 for years with no problems.
