Posted July 29, 200222 yr comment_11571 I'm considering replacing the stock air filter system on my 240 with a K&N system. I realize that without a lot of other work in the engine compartment (mine is all stock), I'm not going to see a huge gain in performance. Do you guys think it's worth it? July 30, 200222 yr comment_11575 I think that as long as you maintain them and clean/oil them correctly/regularly they will capture more dust and allow your engine to breath a bit better. Sure, you won't notice any huge power increase, but just as well treat your engine to some cleaner air.Plus over time, the cost savings of having to always replace your filter will add up. July 30, 200222 yr comment_11576 I cant say on the Z. But I had both paper & foam filters that I used on my 74 vette. I broke down and spent the money on the K&N. It woke that motor up BIG time. Go for it. IMO you will feel the diff. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2440-kn-air-filter-systems/#findComment-11576 Share on other sites
July 30, 200222 yr comment_11579 For the last few weeks I have been thinking of replacing mine with a K+N system too !!!! Did you get any prices on them yet !!!! If so let us know about what they go for !!!! I did put one in my 86 Nissan 4x4 and it did seem to give it a little more pep and that four cyclinder sure could use it . That one ran me 40 or so bucks at a discount auto parts center. July 30, 200222 yr comment_11602 Interesting article, I was going to by some K&N air filters for my 240z carbs {on a 260z} after i had finised the rear suspension on my car . I think i need to do some research , i know a couple of blokes who have done a fair bit of off road racing in buggies I'll check with them and and let you know. The only after market air filters i have had anything to do with is"FINER FILTER" oiled foamtypes and this was in the truck and coach idustry on turbo diesels, "Detroit, and Volvo ETC" from memory the maintenance people at "GREYHOUND" were very happy with them but i can't remember axactly why, i can't vouch for improved performance. Perhaps some others can let us know what luck they've had with K&N's and others. July 30, 200222 yr comment_11620 on that post that ozlime240z put up. It starts out ("I learned my very expensive K&N lession over 20 years ago ") A few things have changed in 20 years. K&N was trying all types of filters at that time. In that post he speeks of OIL on A foam filter. Well K&N put's oil on there filters and sells spray on for after cleaning one. A paper filter will catch finer things but will also make your motor work too suck air through that paper. That means loss of power. Foam filters I have A 8 track player for sale too. ozlime240z I am not saying anything bad here. It's just things have changed in 20 years. July 30, 200222 yr comment_11634 and totally agree with you carguyinok what he also says is he was at a dirt track. "dirt" being the operative word here. if you notice also for just that type of scenario k and n also sells blankets for your filters and they also have a foam blanket wrap for racers in that situation. go from experience not what everyone tells you:finger: that article is taking up :dead: space Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2440-kn-air-filter-systems/#findComment-11634 Share on other sites
July 31, 200222 yr comment_11665 My opinion is you will like what K&N will do for your car. The car sounds better and will get better air (cleaner and less restricted). I also am of the opinion it gives a teensy bit more power. However: I stronly feel the only real way to get noticeable power improvements from this sort of bolt-on is to combine it with a free-flowing exhaust. Easy in, Easy out.Try this: Take the air cleaner off your Toyota Corrola or Volvo 740 or Geo Metro or whatever and go drive it.steve77 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2440-kn-air-filter-systems/#findComment-11665 Share on other sites
July 31, 200222 yr comment_11695 I saw a story on a car show where they took a new 200sx (silva) turbo and about 10 different filters and a dyno and tested which ones actulally made the most power. Suprisingly the car made less power with no air filter than with the standard filter. THe one that made most power I think was a hks foam type filter, but it was only up by about 10 HP over standard.Mr C Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2440-kn-air-filter-systems/#findComment-11695 Share on other sites
July 31, 200222 yr Author comment_11698 As for what ozlime said, considering that my filter system was designed over 30 years ago, a new K&N system has GOT to be better than what I've got now.I already have a free flow exhaust (Flowmaster w/ no resonator) so I think the K&N air intake system should help my car run even better (not that it runs poorly). Can anyone recommend an online vendor? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2440-kn-air-filter-systems/#findComment-11698 Share on other sites
