Double Glasspacks as Mufflers?

I like the period look of the Jag dual muffler system, but not at that price, and the tube diameter is too big. Instead, what would the feasibility & practicality be to use two glasspacks with a sort of Y-pipe as the mufflers? The only limiting factor I can think of is the length of the glasspacks, but my exhaust has about 28 inches for the can, and another 8 or 10 inches for the tailpipes.

I think a connecting strap would be needed to attach a hangar hook, and just clamp the whole mess on to see how it sounds and if the engine likes it. If so, remove, blast clean & coat with something.

On my first 240Z in 1972-73, I had a 3 into 2 header with dual pipes and glasspacks on it. The exhaust system came from BRE and it sounded awesome! The main down side was they used glass packs that looked like cherry bomb mufflers of which were mounted along side the driveshaft. I had to watch speed bumps etc or they would scrape, especially with a lowered suspension. But again since it sounded so good I was willing to put up with the low clearance issue.

My first 72 had the same configuration, a 6->2 header, then dual pipes (over/under at the tips) with 36" long small diameter glasspacks tucked into the tunnel beside the driveshaft.

Best sounding Z exhaust system I've ever heard, by far. As smooth as the best sounding Jags.

Mine were made by Cannon and discontinued in the mid 70's. The BRE system looked identical and disappeared from their catalog at about the same time.

My 71 also had the BRE dual exhaust when I got it 30 years ago and I loved the sound. When it got rusted and started to leak, I replaced it with similar glass packs and pipes from a local muffler shop. The replacement setup sounds as good as the original BRE as far as I can tell. As Zulaytr mentioned the center clearance is a little tight and you need to watch out for high spots even though my car still has the stock suspension.

I currently have a six into one collector then onto two glass pacs then an ansa slanted double tip mounted incorrectly. (not I , a previous owner install).

Clearance issues?

It sounds mighty good .

Mind you , I would imagine a pair of three's into two, leading to parallel glass pacs would sound mighty good as well.

mine are real ugly though, atleast fifteen years old.

I say go for it , it's garanteed to lively up the neighbourhood!

I already use a glasspack as a resonator, and since I have an exhaust manifold, there's only 1 pipe to the back. The only questions I can think of is what length of glasspack to use, to have the end of the glasspack barely showing past the sheetmetal, and what to use for the tips. I think my current can is 28 inches to the front edge of the bumper.

What do you think of painting the cans with black BBQ grill paint? It works on mower mufflers & the boat mufflers & pipes.

You will also need to be careful how the two cans are strapped (attached) together.

I'm really tired of seeing & hearing the fart can that's on there ( it was free. )

kinda like the MSA twice pipes setup but with one pipe going back to them?

I have that system on my 73. Very loud. But I like it! Especially when the motor is turning over 2500. Its not for those that like to listen to music in their Z. The only drawback was the PO cut the rear lower valance to fit over the side by side tips and he did a crappy job.

I think I can fit a couple 24 inchers in there. It already has a resonator, so I'm confident that it will be quiet enough to live with. The muffler that's on there is a freebie fart can, which isn't much different than a glasspack (a stright-through design), except for the volume, and the megaphone outlet.

Maybe I should take my 3 and 4 inch hole saws in case the valence needs cutting?

I'm going to the muffler shop first thing tomorrow (8am Saturday) and hopefully the guy can put together something that will at least look decent. I mentioned the Flowmaster 40 series to the guy, but I would have to buy that on my own from somewhere.
