Correct seat belts for a '70

Hi All,

Can someone point me to where I can find a nice set of correct seat belts for a 1970?

"Nice" might be a challenge since they're all 37 years old and probably show signs of wear, sun damage, fading, spilled drinks, etc. If someone has a nice set of originals they might not want to part with them. For replacements, I'd look in the usual places, (the classifieds in this forum & ebay).

As an alternative, if your buckles are in good shape you might send them off and have them re-webbed. I asked a local auto upholstery shop if they would refurbish mine and they said no due to the liability. Using the search function here, I found a supplier in Texas that supposedly would do the job well.

"Correct", my car, 5/70 has the lap belt with the shoulder strap per the picture below. The shoulder strap has a detachable buckle that I discovered by accident when I was re-installing them. I assume these are correct for a 1970. My belts are in decent shape but I have no idea how well they'll hold up in the event of an accident. If I have them redone, I'll lose the OE tags shown sewn on the belts. Safety/originality, safety/originality, what a dilemna! For now I'm just driving slower

70 an 71 seat belts were identical. It you find a set with the detachable shoulder belt mentioned above they're correct.

Be wary of the webbing and stitching after 37 years. Faded or frayed nylon is a sure sign they've been weakened by exposure and use.

how about opting for some period correct multi point harnesses?

granted, if you want a "stock" looking car, that won't fly...

Not so. The seat belts from a '69 or '70 built 240Z had a black aircraft-style buckle. Starting in 1/71 they switched to a push-button release with a 'Z' on the button. The later push-button style will fit and work in a '70, but they aren't technically 'correct'.

The first picture is of the correct belts for a '70. The second picture is of the lift style buckle. The third picture is of the later push-button type with the Z logo. The correct belt buckle is black with a portion of the lift handle in a black wrinkle finish. I love the second picture because it is of the early belt style with a 1972 ID tag sewn on to the belt. Very odd.

Anyone will tell you that a 30 year old belt is not safe at all and should be re-webbed and reconditioned. Ssnake-oyl will recondition the belts with all new webbing but they aren't cheap. I think a set is $250 or so to recondition a set.

Hullo All

Yesterday I completed the installation of my retractable seat belts and had my car re-registered after 6-months off the road. The seat belts work really well and are so much more comfortable and secure than the old set.

They are not in the "full harness" category as far as safety goes, but are certainly much better than the originals. It is a compromise, but I am not prepared to compromise on safety.

There is a set of push-button type on eBay right now ('72 ).

He's sell in left and right in separate auctions. They come up for auction often.... there was a sale a week or so ago on eBay for push-button type that never got any bids with a $0.99 starting bid, and others that have brought good prices. Jimmy Z, I don't think the seatbelts in the ebay ad that Deesz posted a link to will work in your car. They are the later retractible style and I don't think your 2/71 has the pockets built into floor for the retractors.

Yeah, I agree. The 2/71 doesn't have the compartment for the mechanism. Something tells me it may be a while.
