Darb,

In case you're looking for it, carfiche.com has the service manual available for free download on its site (if it reads TnA, it's temporarily not available as they cycle which manuals are up every hour...just keep checking):

Good luck on getting her going. It's going to be a great weekend for a run around lake Michigan...

Cheers,

Hey Bigoak, Thanks for the info about the manual. I'm sure it will prove to be very useful. And yes, KDmatt. We have a DeLorean... yawn. Just kidding. I like the D but I like the Z more!

GOOD NEWS!!! I found my problem! I found another leaky injector hose. As it turns out, the car was lean rather than rich. My problem is the little wiring harness that goes to the injectors. Well two of the boots are cracked and brittle (well they all are but those two are the worst). And moisture is getting into the wiring and causing the injectors not to get a connection. I cleaned them up, electrical taped the boots, added some dielectric grease and there you go. Unfortunately, driving it today with water in those injector connectors. I think I may have shorted those two out. When I ohmed them yesterday they were all fine. When I ohmed them again today, two of them were bad. But at least now I know. I'm replacing those two injectors tomorrow and we'll see how it goes.

Ahhh yep, that'll do it too. I once lost an entire cylinder due to a bad injector connector (the connections were green, nasty).

Keep up the good fight, we young, hip, gunslingin' Z-owners gotta stick together!

HI Darb, If your car was sleeping for four years you really need to have your fuel tank checked. I know it's an incredible PITA, but it will cause you nothing but trouble as time goes on and as you said your Z is far too pretty to just sit the garage. My 76 ran great when I first got it then the bomb dropped and it was six month ordeal (4 being garaged for winter) before I bit the and dropped the fuel tank. Nothing but a mean growling kitty under the hood now, well sometimes she purrs, but mostly she growls in delight.

If your going to change two injectors change them all. 31 year old parts will surely start to fail if you start mixing in new with the old. Good Luck and Good Driving. Dan

I wouldn't drop the tank unless it was necessary. Mine had been sitting for over four years when I got it. It had low fuel pressure caused by crud in the tank from sitting cloggging up the lines. I actually replaced the tank as good ones were available ten years ago. But if the car isn't showing the symptoms, I'd leave it alone. Nor do I agree with changing all of the injectors if only one or two are bad. The injectors are pretty simple. Either they work or they don't. As long as they are clean and electrically sound I'd leave those alone too. I'll address a problem with my cars when there is a problem but I don't like throwing parts (and money) at problems that don't exist.

as do we all. However it's the onlyway to get it right. If you drop the tank you can take it to a radiator shop and have them clean it for a fraction of the cost of a new one. I know I said that mine was fixed but some more stuff must come off the inside cuz the symptoms have started rearing their ugly heads again (GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!).

A trick I know you'll love to know, 83 and 84 Maximas share a lot of mechanical parts with the Zs. Fuel pumps, injectors, engines, trannies and rear diffs just to name the ones I have found. I know cause I own an 83 Maxima. I jsut recenly stole the 5 speed out of it. It was a direct bolt in, of course the the pressure plate had to go along as well, but you get the idea.

And of course if you wanna enjoy that Z while you're stashing dough away, hit the pick and pulls in your area and grab some maxima injectors (look for the dirty crusty ones, chances are they haven't started leaking yet)for about three bucks apiece, drain you tank, tap the drain hole with 1/4" NP and put a 90 degree nipple in the hole. Plug off the stock fuel pipe, use some 3/8'" fuel line with a fram G3 filter inline between the tank and pump. Don't worry about ruining the drain hole with the tap. When you have the tank fixed the drain plug will thread right back into hole and seal like she was never even gone. Oh and be sure to clean the inlet filter of the pump. It's in the inlet nipple of the pump. Keep changing out the fram filters till you get the cash to have the tank cleaned and your baby will run fine. Hope this helps, until later ,bye. Dan

Actually, I know it's probably a bit late to chime in with this, but there are some places that can 'rebuild' and 'refresh' old injectors to new-like condition.

I bought some crusty used injectors off of ebay with every intention of sending them out to get refreshed and restored to good working order.

There's a guy on ebay who sells injector servicing for about US $72.00 (for six), and I've heard good things about him.

Well, for now I'm using the injector I can get through work (they have a lifetime warranty) and they are only fourty bucks. I'm sure eventually I'll put some nice performance injector in there. But for now, she runs. And that makes this girl happy.

Thanks for the tip, Rockr69. I might just have to do that soon.
