July 5, 200717 yr comment_214158 Not meaning to rain on the parade... but, is the owner providing a CA smog certificate with the sale? The reason I mention this is because of the reference to the AFM adjustment. My 78 280Z had a problem passing CA emissions due to the AFM being defective. It ran fine but the test readings came back as a gross polluter.Sounds like the one you found was well cared for though. Are you in the Northern California area? July 5, 200717 yr comment_214189 Nota280 You got me wondering, mine is a Claifornia car as well and I got it pretty cheap. Hadn't been driven since 95 and I have had a couple of people comment that she blows smoke when I shift. I have only noticed it for the first minute or two when I start up - I was assuming the valve seals were on their way out. Perhaps mine was unable to pass the smog test - any cost effective way to find out? My 78 blows white smoke for a few minutes after startup. Once the operating temperature rises the smoke stops. The FI systems are not to hard to work on once you get the basics down.In my area there are a lot of S30's and S130's parked for failing smog. The 75 I have now was parked since 1992 for failing smog. Fortunetly I do not have to deal with emissions testing on it for registration. It is sad to go into the wrecking yard here and see at least 6 decent bodied 280Z's being parted out. There is a "Green" painted 78 280 in Pick-N-Pull right now with an actual paint code of 638.The only thing cost effective on these cars to me is that I can do the work myself. You may have experienced cars that do that but mine doesn't and hasn't done that in the 10 years I've owned it. Here is a summary of the smog tests on my car in the 10 years period that I've owned it. Are you in the Northern California area? WOW  I have to check that out then. The car literraly ran like a top so I doubt theres a smog issue but you never know untill you look IT didn't smoke as it was running though, no exhaust vissible at all. The tags on it are good till the end of this year if thats a clue or anything. I never had to get a car smogged or tagged so don't know what all that means only that tags a expensive  For those outside of Cali tags are (Califonia Registration stickers we have to buy and put on our license plates from CA DMV), once again  I agree there are alot of good Z's sitting in wrecking and tow yards around here. There was nice Carnival Red 240z sitting on top of a Honda up the the street ( Thank God it wasn't under it) And right now theres a 1983 or so 280ZX in a tow yard that sells Impound stuff. They're asking $550 for it but it looks like the Police were looking for durgs or something. They even Ripped the Rearview mirror off I guess to even take that apart :dead: Good news it supossedly runs whit the Screw Driver method and has a 5 Speed Tansmission. Oh, yes I'm in Northern Cal. Racerville is located just outside of Sacramento Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/24730-need-tips-on-buying-1977-280z-please/?&page=2#findComment-214198 Share on other sites

You know the maintenance history. Very commendable that you do take care of yours here in California. Maybe we need to define the word "Smoke". My 2006 Ford Ranger pickup smokes a bit on start up. On a cold morning it will "Smoke" lightly for about 5 -10 minutes before becoming clear. July 5, 200717 yr comment_214206 There's a smoke detector and a CO detector on the wall in the garage right behind where I park the Z. It has never set either of them off. Maybe because it's inside and doesn't collect moisture while it's parked. My truck will occaisionally set one or both of them off but that a whole different story. No emissions equipment there! Hey WingZrO, what's your VIN or liscense plate number? I can run the smog check history since it's a California car.
