July 1, 200717 yr comment_213805 I had a problem with heat and elevation causing vapor lock in a 260 I had, bigger fuel pump in the engine compartment separate from the one by the tank fixed the problem. July 1, 200717 yr Author comment_213817 I do live at 7000 ft, does the altitude have a marked affect?? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/24732-vapor-lock/?&page=2#findComment-213817 Share on other sites
July 1, 200717 yr comment_213835 I was under the impression it did because the air was thinner and the carbs needed to be run a little richer to compensate. Ztherapy asks if you live above 6K ft elevation when they rebuild your carbs...not sure exactly why but I assume it's so they can change something in the configuration of what they end up sending you.Another option may be to replace the fuel filter. My tank probably needs a good cleaning and when the fuel filter gets plugged up, less fuel makes it to the carbs. July 2, 200717 yr comment_213858 Don't go through MSA, I got some Carter pump for about $100 at O'Reilly...it's not stock and there are challenges to mounting it but it flows a helluva lot more than stock for a helluva lot less than what MSA wants for one. Hi altitude leaner. 58 needle instead of a 54. gogriz RX-7 fuel pump from a '79 or '80 at the u-pull-it $15.00 I like that price much better. They pump 4.5 to 5 PSI and lots of volume. I run one with no mechanical and have for 6+ yrs with no problem with carbs or lean issue from lack of fuel , or too much pressure. Put one on a stroker engine with triples and it fed it great also. After 5+ years of use I did have one fail. But had a spare and made the change. Gary They are almost silent also. July 22, 200717 yr Author comment_216031 :stupid::stupid::stupid: When my car first stalled on the road in the heat, my first thought was ,"fuel filter or Fuel pump" so there on the side of the road I checked the filter by disconnecting the fuel line at the pump and blowing backwards through the filter towards the tank. It felt clear and when I cranked it a few minutes later I could see fuel entering the filter and it started so I figured both were OK and the heat was the problem. A few days ago it was nice and cool so I(still thinking vapor lock) took it for a spin. It began to act fuel starved. So this time I took it home, removed the fuel filter and tried to blow through the inlet side of the filter and almost ruptured my ear drums it was so clogged up. Ten minutes and $3.00 later it runs perfect heat or cool. But I am grateful for all the instant help and suggestions.
