which lip spoiler do you think looks the best?

For looks I like what I've seen on the UK cars with the small chin spoiler/air dam/lip. However, if I recall correctly from old posts, these were not proven to do much to keep the front end down. I could be wrong and some of our UK/Euro members would know much better than I. I think I will go with the BRE-type for its abilities for stopping the front end from floating and its understated/period-correct look, especially here in North America. What were the more popular options in the home JDM market back in the 70s?

I prefer the BRE Spook and ran one on my car from the time it was new in 1972 until 1987. However, with a lowered car, I ended up repairing the lip on the bottom of the spoiler several times due to parking incidents, dips in driveways, etc. I ran the stock valance from 1987 until 2006 but never really liked the look. In 2006, I considered putting a Spook back on, or perhaps the basic MSA airdam ... then thought about my clearance problems with my Spook years ago (the car is still lowered). So, the compromise to have something other than the stock valance was to install the MSA aero lip. It's sorta an S130/280ZX look ...

......But on a 280Z, the front bumper would completely overwhelm a small spoiler. For these cars, a bigger air dam is the way to go.

That is unless one plans to ditch the bigger bumpers. Federal Schmederal, I'm gonna remove mine one of these days.

Haha, not bad.

I can't quite ditch my bumpers yet just because I have this awkward plastic piece instead of the metal valences... It would look weird without the appropriate metal pieces to me, so I'm on the hunt for the full set of valences.

Oddly enough I have the center one, but it's senselessly banged up.

Hey Goose, that aero lip doesnt look too bad, do you think its very functional?

Maybe a little. I don't top-end the car like I frequently did 35 years ago so don't really know what it's giving in regards to drag coefficient/top speed or downforce/stability.

If anyone was following the wind-tunnel testing that the folks on HybridZ ran, there was a very interesting finding. Nearly all of these added devices - whether a Spook or a dam, leave a gap between the top or back of the device and the lower radiator support. The device may funnel air upwards and through the grill, but then the air hits the resistance of the radiator and it just flows back down through the gap between the back of the device and the radiator support. I have a cardboard template sitting on my workbench right now that I cut out to seal that area - just waiting to find some aluminum sheet to cut out and install. Even if there is not a significant aero benefit, there should at least be a cooling benefit.

I just ordered a BRE Style Front Spoiler from Les at Classic Datsun. You can see what it looks like by going to his site http://classicdatsun.com/ and clicking on 240Z parts, then click the tab across the top that says "Fiberglass" and you can see photos of the front and rear spoilers as well as other various parts he sells.

I find it interesting that a majority fo the posts in this thread reflect the need to be pleasing to the eye vs functionality.

I too have run the "BRE" style airdam because it just seems right (when you look at the car). But from the driver's seat, while the BRE is good (much better than nothing or smaller Euro-style lip), it is not as efficient as a full airdam like the MSA III version.

I'm running a gnose (hence the screen name) on my 240 at the present time and it is okay but it still needs a spoiler. That is this year's winter project.

When the Hybridz wind-tunnel results come out later this month all this will be easier to understand, but right now there'a a news black-out until the magazine hits the stands.

Thought I would tack this on this thread instead of starting a new one. This is a front spoiler that was once on my car, before I owned it. I have not come across another quite like it and was wondering if anyone recognizes it. It’s tough to photograph. There are no ID markings. It is molded from a type of polyurethane. It does not have a great deal of flexibility but that could be from age. It was fastened to the lower valance panel with a single row of 6 bolts and nuts with large washers. Not worth the hassle or cost of shipping, but if someone wants it, I’ll put it aside instead of tossing it. I should have mounted it before disassembling the car to get an idea of what it would look like. If you have a pic of one of these mounted, put it up here. The second pic is just to show the profile which is similar with the exception of the upper edge and is not bolted to a valance.
