Posted August 2, 200222 yr comment_11825 Well boys, I've always wanted to try the electric cooling fan sold by Motorsport. $130 something. Installed this week, and it is a dandy. Bolts up easy enough, car runs quieter, and most importantly, stays cool! It was mid 90's today and stuck in traffic, I swear it runs substantially cooler. Just have to get used to it running for a few minutes after shutdown. It's in a plain jane factory stock 73 240 w/72 carbs and 3 row core. I'm glad enough just to be rid of that fan clutch. Anyway, if you've thought about it, go ahead and try it. It works. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2478-electric-fan-installed/ Share on other sites
December 16, 200222 yr comment_21003 did you notice any difference in the quickness it revved or any power gains? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2478-electric-fan-installed/#findComment-21003 Share on other sites
December 16, 200222 yr comment_21008 Does it turn on when you start the car or is it temp switched? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2478-electric-fan-installed/#findComment-21008 Share on other sites
December 16, 200222 yr comment_21012 Me thinks it's on a thermostat Daniel, if it still runs after the car is shut off....... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2478-electric-fan-installed/#findComment-21012 Share on other sites

December 17, 200222 yr Author comment_21018 Seems to rev alittle easier, can't say much about any substantial increase in HP. I have also removed all smog nonsense so I'm sure I've picked up alittle. It does run for a time after shutdown, but I can't tell you if it's a timer thing or temp. All I know is it works great! I am also about to finish up installation of Superiors after-market A/C setup, so it will be interesting to see how it works then. If you are considering A/C, this is a good setup, but laid out by a third grader. I have removed all smog, moved alternator to smog pump location, compressor to alt. location, recut all hoses, and had to do some customizing on the brackets. Otherwise it would have been ugly, trying to mount comp. under carbs, and running 4 miles of hose to heater side. December 17, 200222 yr comment_21027 WGHungerford: Have you upgraded the electrical system to handle the load of the electric cooling fan? Or is the load small enough that a completely stock electrical system can handle it?On really hot days, my Z will overheat in stop & go traffic, so I'd like to add an electric cooling fan to give a little more air flow through the radiator core in traffic. But I don't want to chop up my wiring, or go to an internally regulated alternator. Thanks, Carl Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/2478-electric-fan-installed/#findComment-21027 Share on other sites
December 17, 200222 yr comment_21036 I plan to get me one of these $30 fans too, or maybe a $5 junkyard Camaro fan instead, we'll see That and a new biggy radiator, should be nice! More like $130.00 + You must be talking about something else. Big radiator won't help much for my problem, I need to move air through the 3 row core that I have. Other than really hot days in stopped traffic conditions, everything runs fine as is.CarlBTW, where in the Bay Area are you? December 17, 200222 yr comment_21051 BAMBIKILLER:I had traffic overheating problems with my '71 when I lived in the Bay Area (we know what traffic can be like there). I installed a cheap electric fan with a thermostatic control and solved the overheating problem. It doesn't take a big (i.e., expensive) fan to get the job done. A modest amount of air moving through a relatively small area of the radiator is MUCH better than the wisp of air pulled through the entire radiator by the stock fan. December 17, 200222 yr comment_21057 A brand new fan can be had for $30, I'll do the wiring myself. I heard there was a CSI electric water pump near completion also...I'm in South San Fran, near Daily City, work in SF, about 35 miles from you.
