Hi all,

I have just purchased a '77 260Z to which I've replaced the flat top SUs with dome top ones donated from my 240Z (which now has an RB26DETT).

The problem that I'm getting is that the plugs keep on getting soaked with fuel when I try and crank the engine over!!! (The car used to run with the flat tops before I pulled them off)

What can I do to rectify this?? Is there a base setting on which I can set the SUs to to start the engine (then later tune them properly when the engine eventually runs!!!)

Also the 260Z has an electric fuel pump (not that I think its causing the problem, but should there be a fuel pressure regulator as well???)

Definately try the fuel regulator! SU's only need 4 PSI, and much more than that will overcome the fuel bowl needles. Check your bowl vents and see if the bowls are flooding. But here's a test first. SU's have enough fuel in the bowls to start and idle for a few minutes. So disconnect the fuel line and try it.

You don't need that RB26! That's not the right engine! Give it to me and I'll keep it safe for you! LOL

A good starting point on the SU's mixture is 2 turns out from fully seated.

Turn the round knob located underneath the body of the carb (where the fuel goes into it) clockwise until it stops. Then back it off 2 turns. That should be slightly rich, but still good enough to start the engine and let it run fairly decent. I'd still look at a fuel regulator also.

Ps- How much would an RB26DET cost to buy and get shipped to the US? I'm starting to entertain this idea...:D

To close the fuel mixture knobs turn counterclockwise (as your looking down from above)( if under the car looking up you turn clockwise). Then open both two to two and a half turns. This should give you a starting point as long as your fuel bowls are not flooding. Is your choke set on or off. If your plugs are fuel soaked try with your choke off.

Sorry about not specifying the direction I was looking at the carbs.

I was picturing it from viewing the carbs on the bench (looking from underneath). I preset my carbs before I put them on the car.

:classic: I hope you have solved the problem with the camber of your left front wheel. A problem like that can be very simple or complex.

Only reason I mention mixture wheel directional orientation is the fact that I have found the guidance to be very confusing in many of the publications. In many cases individuals end up opening the mixture wheen and encountering a larger problem.

I have solved the problem!!!

Thanks to those that have given input, much appreciated.

The problem was fixed from a combination of adjusting the float valve, disconnecting the choke cables and adjusting the knurled mixture adjusting knob!

I installed the dome tops on Friday and later that night when I was on chat with hmsport, he gave me some tips and I got it going the next day.

Mr Camouflage>> I've only got 2 zeds at the moment, but have owned 2 240s and 2 260s in the past (all 2 seaters!).

I actually went to look at a '71 240Z this morning to buy for my dad (I got my dad hooked on S30 cars also!) but it wasn't it the best of shape, so skip that one.
