How the heck do you wire this thing??

Ok,

I just installed the new radiator and I have mounted the electric fan from Black dragon. The fan has two wires...Blue and Black, black is negative. To test the fan I ran the wires to the battery and it started blowing air...Yea...I think.

Not to sound stupid, but where do I go from here? The instructions say nothing. If I run the wires direct into the battery it will be on all the time. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but how the heck do I wire this thing. I want it to run when the key is on right....

Any help would be appreaciated.

Did you get the thermostat kit with it ? You need that for it to work automatically, or you could wire it to a relay with a switch under the dash so you can flip it on when you need it. Just keep an eye on your gauge or it's melt down city. Really, you need a thermostat kit for it to work right.

You can run it to a 12V IGN source, and it will run all the time. Probably not what you want to do. Running it to a switch in the cockpit is commonly done, but it's a fire hazard (those switches get red hot).

Best practice is to wire it through a fused circuit to a thermostat and relay. Google the search terms 'how to wire electric fan' and I'll bet you find a ton of information on how to do this properly.

It didn't come with a switch? Huh? I'm with ZGL on this one, get a thermostat set up or run a switch to the dash. I had an electric fan on a switch in my old 240Z (cry, sniff, sniff, RIP) and ran the fan when the car got hot or when I knew I was going to run it hard.

Did you buy a fan that connects with a shroud to the radiator or is it the type were you have to thread bolts through the radiator?

Here's a crude diagram I drew up so my son would know how I wired his electric fans. You can use this for one or two fans. Choose your own thermostat(s) switch temperature rating. This will make it fully automatic without the need for a manual switch.

Buy a Hayden 3653 fan control kit. It's adjustable and ready to go..Hell it even has blue wire. It also can be set up for a manual switch...But I can not tell you how well it works I never installed mine on my Merkur XR4Ti.

I do have the thermo kit, It was in the original box from BD but in a seperate plastic bag so I missed it. It does have a crude diagram to go by.

This fan does connect to the radiator via plastic threads...(I hope they hold)

Quick question though, in the temperature control kit it says to wire "ignition controlled or constant 12v power source" does this mean it's always "on" but only when the sensor reads the desired temp, in other words, it can start up even when the ignition is off and stays on until the temp drops?

Yup. Many new cars are that way these days, it helps cool the engine down quicker after shutdown. Whether or not you want it to do that on your car is up to you.

I got the fan hooked up and it's working great. So far the temp gauge hasn't gone past halfway with the new radiator, 160 t-stat, and electric fan....Yea.
