door bottom weatherstrip orientation...

The weatherstrip which is attached to the bottom of the door via rivets has two different-length flanges. Based on this picture from the gallery it appears the longer flange goes toward the inside and the short one goes to the outside...

...Can anyone confirm? I thought if the longer flange was inboard it might bind against the rocker sill and contribute to problems with the door shutting correctly. And, with the longer flange outboard it conformed more to the shoulder of the rocker sill.

Humble's book (p. 164) only says "...be sure to orient it correctly for a good seal." Thanks, Wick. Verrrrry helpful.

So what's the right orientation?

The orientation shown in your photographs matches my recollection of how mine were mounted before I removed them for painting.

I have etched your photo in my mind. I wonder now if installing the lower rubber seal incorrectly could have a hard to close/popping open effect on the door?

Any thoughts on this? I'm in the process of trying to figure out why a once perfectly normal operating door would suddenly be so hard to open and close. All new gaskets and seals installed, fresh paint, etc....

I reinstalled with the longer flange toward the car (first with tape), and it fits perfectly. If you mount the longer flange toward the door (outward) it potentially will block up the door drain holes, which could lead to rust, etc. The longer flange oriented toward the car mates up nicely with the rocker sill, also.

Unfortunately, I failed to take a pic before disassembly, which led to my confusion to begin with..Took pics of everything else, but not that:tapemouth...sigh...It's always the little stuff you figure you don't need photos of that end up biting you in the rear later on.

Thanks for the pictures Steve, it will help when I get back down there this week. It's a customers car, so I'll have to wait a bit before I can be sure I installed them correctly or not. He's bringing it back to me for a couple other issues as well, so we'll see. Thanks, John
