Price for Almost PERFECT Rear Bumper

New-to-240z

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm going to be doing a repaint on my car and will not be using the rear bumper on my 73 Z. The bumper is in PERFECT CONDITION. No dents, no scratches, rubber is NOT WARPER AT ALL, and chrome is VERY SHINY even without any polishing. I am thinking of selling it to a friend but didn't know what kind of price I should sell it for. I have seen a rear bumper on ebay go for around $500, and that was a month or two ago. Its shape was EXACTLY like mine. I was just wondering what you all think I should let it go for.

( In case any of you are wondering, I am going to be bondo-ing the holes and such and will be repainting the car, prob in a shade or two lighten then gunmetal. If U've ever seen the Acura RSX in that dark grey/gunmetal, that's what I'm going for. )

So guys, what do you think?

DO NOT "bondo" the holes.

Bondo is porous and will absorb water from the back side and cause problems down the road.

If you're intent on having the "shaved" bumper look, then put some bumper bolts from the back side of the bumper mounts to the front, grind/cut them to size to even them up with the sheet metal, then fill with bondo if you wish. The point is to seal that exposed backside of the bondo from moisture.

Also be aware that there will be little to NO protection in the back in the case of an accident, not that there is much back there anyhow, but now you'll be exposed to even shopping cart damage.

Lastly, just as a precautionary note, you might check California's notorious tyrannical laws specifically regarding bumpers. I don't know that they will or will not give you trouble, but fore-warned is fore-armed.

Thanx for all the responses guys, but I'm really looking more for a price :)

@E : I will DEF take your word for it and go your route. I was actually thinking of getting a carbon fiber rear bumper and front bumper. Cali is a BITCH when it comes to bumper laws.

@zhead : Front bumper is exactly the same. In perfect conditon. I will be taking pictures of both here very soon.

@ Mat M : Come on man, help me out! I know this thing is worth money, I just don't know how much.

Thanx again guys for the help. I'll be taking pictures of the rear and front on friday and posting up.

Check MSA's line of body kits and you may find a very nice looking "integrated" bumper look.

You might want to post pictures of the bumpers AND post your build date. There is a change in the bumpers in 73 from the thinner more desireable ones to the slightly larger more robust ones. (Part of the US-DOT requirement for 3mph impact strength.) Usually, the larger bumpers also had a "filler" that went behind the bumper.

I'm sure Arne will pop on and post the defining info to help you determine which you have.

In your original post you state that you saw one in exactly the same condition sell on eBay for $500. Are you hoping that people here will give a higher number? It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. That number will obviously vary depending on who's looking and when. If you're trying to maximize the selling price then your best bet is to put it on eBay and hope that people get into an irrational bidding war over it. If you're worried about not getting enough for it then put a high reserve price or high starting price on it.

I'm not looking for 500. I was thinking more around 300 or so. I have the thinner type from what i have gathered. The inside has no extra padding or foam or whatnot. I've seen the bigger bumpers and mine is DEF thinner.

I can put it up on Ebay, but i have a friend that is VERY interested in buying them. He saw it sitting in my garage a few days ago and was like . . "DAMN MAN that is one nice bumper! U thinking of selling it?" :)

Well, I'll throw some pics up here soon and show you guys what she looks like.

Dude!

I bought front and rear NOS euro(no hole) bumpers this year for $700. Guess I did pretty good. The guy even through in some newly recover 260 seats for free. My point is, old bumpers in good condition are only worth $500 if you can find someone to buy them for that. I have an attic full of bumpers, all of which I would consider in excellent shape. Infact, I have taken some of the dull ones, and welded up the holes and taken 80 grit after them to get the chrome off to do exactly what you want to do to yours. Hate to see you do that, when you might be able to sell them for good money, and buy some sub-prime bumpers and weld them up and paint them. Just my 2 pennies.
