Found #2802 rusting away in a field...

A guy I work with was driving about an hour north of Toronto when he passed a field and saw a Datsun and some other cars. He called me and I got him to investigate further.

He spoke to a guy working there, the owner wasnt around (a farm I think?), but he looked at the car and took some pics.

He was told the interior is in great shape, but its stored away. The car doesnt come with a motor, although there was a Toyota Supra motor currently in the car.

The guy there said the owner wanted $3,500.00 for it! I was thinking I might be able to buy the whole parts car for the dash alone, maybe get some seats and a better passenger door....but thats an outrageous price. Im sure once presented with some pricing logic the price would go down, but at a $3500 opener...I dont think I'll bother.

Heres some pics:

$3500 for a picked over inop? more like $500.-$1000(because of, and assuming it is perfect, the dash).

Count on it needing floors, taillights, harnesses, lots of trim, radiator, straightening (body and chassis-look through the grill opening at the lower core support). It is rolling crate for the toyota engine-if the dash doesn't pan out!

Nice...a Smart ForTwo in the background of the head-on pic...

Hahahahaa...thats my buddies car. We always bug him about it. He bought it because he drives about 150km a day and he needed something good on gas. I took it for a drive the other day and tried out the paddle-shifters. The car is like driving a tall go-cart.

And several pounds (at least half an inch) of bondo on the rear panel as well as both rear fenders, and the driver's door that I could tell.

Crumpled RH inner fender support and the obvious front end damage that Will pointed out.

All of these point to a vehicle that's been driven hard and abused, and what's worse repaired pooly. While the PO may have had good intentions in "repairing" it at one time, sadly it spelled doom for this car.

$250 TOP dollar would be my offer, and I'd try to get him to accept Canadian dollars.

OK...I talked to my co-worker again, the car is at a body-shop (not a farm like I earlier stated) of all places. So clearly this guy should have 'some' knowledge of what a car is worth. He verified again the $3500 asking price, and said the toyota supra motor comes with the car, and that there was some sort of transmission in the hatch. He said the guy clearly didnt know alot about the car because he was talking about the 'original' steering wheel (as in the photo), etc..

This is down the street from me. It's a wreck. The interior is completely stripped (although the guy at the shop said the owner has everything at his house).

When I asked the guy about the car, he said it was a 1972 (so much for "knowledge"). I noticed the hatch vents, but just thought it was a swap...(I know, I should have picked up on the lack of vents on the pillars, guess I wasn't any smarter). Hmm...never thought to check the VIN #.

Zak. I might have a line on a door for you. I need a driver's side (why I stopped to look at this car) and I'm going to check out a pair this weekend. I'll let you know.

Cheers,
