Posted July 28, 200717 yr comment_216757 I'm getting ready to put my 5sp in and I was wondering if I should go wth a roller pilot bearing instead of a normal oillite bearing.I do Autocross the car and plan on doing some track days and maybe time trails.Any thoughts? Thanks Eric Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25040-pilot-bearing/ Share on other sites
July 28, 200717 yr comment_216759 Roller pilot bearings cut down wear and tear that stock bearings put on your input shaft. I'd say, if you're going to go in there anyway, why not? I have them in all three of my street driven Datsuns. I've been told that they require more maintainence, but I've not had any problems yet. July 28, 200717 yr comment_216769 OH GAWD I'd like to shoot the previous owner who put in a roller pilot bearing before I owned the car. Once the bearing had become worn enough, it just fell apart while removing it but the outer race of the bearing was determined not to come out. Every trick we could try, fire, ice, pry, grease & pressure trick, and finally after finding a strong enough metal demel bit to cut this hardened metal ring.... I won the battle! Sumbitch I'd rather replace 5 brass bearings over wrestling one broken roller bearing any day. Sorry, I still have a bad taste from that episode! They might be a better idea in theory, until you have to remove one that has gone bad. Good luck. July 28, 200717 yr Author comment_216773 I did a search on Hybridz and the over all thought was not to use a roller bearing. because they don't don't seem to last very long.So it seems Sblake01 your are having some very good luck with yours.Eric Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25040-pilot-bearing/#findComment-216773 Share on other sites
July 28, 200717 yr comment_216787 Come to think of it, I only have them in the two that I don't drive much. My daily driver still has the bronze bushing in it. The Z and the truck have them and I don't think I've put more that about 1500-2000 miles on either of them since the install. How long do I have? July 28, 200717 yr Author comment_216823 From the thread I read..You pretty much pulled the pin on that grenade. Coffey was changing his every 15 to 20 hrs when he changed the clutch. For the little track time I get and as much as I drive my Z I'll go with a oillite bearing.Eric Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25040-pilot-bearing/#findComment-216823 Share on other sites

July 28, 200717 yr comment_216826 Looks like I be changing out a couple of pilot bearings soon. Either by choice or by necessity, whichever comes first! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25040-pilot-bearing/#findComment-216826 Share on other sites
August 2, 200717 yr comment_217309 Roller pilot bearings are really only needed when regularly shifting past 7,500 rpm. I tried a few on the Rusty Old Datsun and hated 'em. Went back to the OEM bronze bearing and didn't notice any difference. This is how the bearings typically looked after I removed them: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25040-pilot-bearing/#findComment-217309 Share on other sites
August 3, 200717 yr comment_217341 Geez John, How did you keep yours so nice. Wish mine would have removed that nice! I'm still finding pieces on the garage floor! :nervous: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25040-pilot-bearing/#findComment-217341 Share on other sites

August 3, 200717 yr comment_217385 I remove pilot bushings with a tool that was actually designed to remove valve lifters. Bought it really cheap at Harbor Freight years ago. It actually does a better job of removing pilot bushings than it does removing lifters.
