Posted July 29, 200717 yr comment_216858 Hey folks,I'm trying to get the black plastic trim pieces off of the back of my 260 so I can prep the areas in the recess around the taillights. I've removed the plastic rivets along the top edge but still can't get them off. What's holding them on? I can't figure it out. This is one of the few things left to do before she goes into the body shop. July 29, 200717 yr comment_216859 If you're referring to the metal surrounds, there is a pair of clips on the lower edge that "bite" into the lower edge of the metal. The upper edge is held by the plastic rivets. From your title it would be easy to confuse what you are referring to as the chrome trim in the middle of the lens instead of the surrounds.E Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25056-need-help-removing-taillight-trim/#findComment-216859 Share on other sites
July 29, 200717 yr Author comment_216862 I'm referring to the black plastic surrounds. The 260s used what appear to be the same surrounds as 280s. I believe only 240s used metal surrounds. I didn't see any clips on the bottom, but I'll have another look. July 29, 200717 yr comment_216879 Remove the rear interior plastic to access nuts holding the tailight assembly tothe car .Remove tailights to remove the screws holding the finishing panel to the tailight assembly. A little caution here as the tailight gasket may tear if pulled out to quick. August 2, 200717 yr Author comment_217270 Thanks for the help with this. I've got the trim off and the lights back on the car with 2 nuts holding each on. Should be an easy removal when she arrives at the body shop. She's going in there in 5 days! I'm going to be without a car for a month. February 18, 201114 yr comment_346390 When you expose the mounting bolts after taking off the interior panel, you might run into quite a bit of epoxy used by the factory. Spray the bolts well with WD40 and save yourself some time. I also used a rubber mallet to "tap" the taillight assembly off without breaking anything. It slides straight off and straight back on. Don't fight the glue with a wrench or your arm strength, break the glue with WD40, don't break the part in your hands.Once the entire assembly is removed from the car, the taillights can be disassembled from the plastic plate, which you'll learn is a brown colored plastic that was painted black on the outside by the factory. The "chrome" trim can further be removed from the black facing as well. It's a good opportunity to clean what is normally one of the crappier looking areas of our cars. I had several hornet nests and near-handfuls of dirt back there so it's not just about the aesthetics.
