Better still - Post the engine serial number. It's on the side of the block, just below the #5/6 spark plugs... There are two pads cast in the block - and the engine serial number will be stamped into them...

How do you know it's not original? An L24 is the stock engine. What is the build date (driver door jamb tag)? Your engine was likely produced for a car built in August or September of 1971.

Not meaning to hijack thread but, I have the same situation. 76 280z, build plate says engine should be 084449 but has engine L28-216277. I was wondering is there an engine database to search through for the year of engine? Also has N-42 head. Could I have original head with later short block? Thanks for any info.

That's a shade under 60000 before mine. But you VIN is just under 163000 prior to mine. My engine is 275875 and it's the original engine and N47 head, build date 5/78. 78 didn't have the engine number on the VIN plate. Doesn't really answer your question but it might help establish a point of reference.
