Starting engine without clutch?

I was looking to see if a disabled clutch (the slave cylinder hose is busted) would still let me start the car?

I can try to start it either in or out of gear if needed but wanted to make sure I was not doing more harm than good until the new hose comes in.

Thanks

SuDZ

If your real clever, you can start the car in gear (after warming it up) and give it some throttle straight away to get moving, then go up gears easy without using the clutch, going down is possible too, but a little more skill involved.

same deal when stopping and starting at the lights.

Drove for 2 weeks in a gemini (Chevette to you yanks) with a busted cable before i could afford a new one.

My clutch cylinder went out on me during a test drive a while back. I suddenly discovered the problem at a traffic light when the transmission wouldnt go into any gear because the clutch would not disengage. I was contemplating calling for a tow, but I was blocking traffic so I decided to shut down the engine, put the trany in 1st gear, then hit the starter. It took right off with a lurch thanks to the ignition upgrade and a good battery. I then proceeded to drive it home in 1st gear not wanting to experiment with clutch-less shifts right then. Fortunately it was only a mile or so and I didnt have to rev the engine too much get there. I was a little nervous approaching the driveway and trying to get the garage door opener to work so I could drive straight in, otherwise I was going to have to kill the ignition to stop on the sloped driveway. It all worked out ok but made for a memorable day :nervous:

LOL you are so right. I drove my maxima for two years like that before robbing it for the 5 speed. I put the Z four speed back in and now I have a clutch!YEAH!
