Posted August 18, 200717 yr comment_218847 Hi I bought a few days ago a pair of aftermarket JDM headlight covers with metal rings. My 240z is an early 1971 and I nottest that he has 1 headlight fiberglass bucket and one metal. The question is should I trade one of them to have them equaly?Does it fits better in metal ones only?Does the fiberglass hold the rivet nuts wellHere is the link that I read that.http://rudel87-web.hp.infoseek.co.jp/covers/lightcovers.htmlIf I should trade, I appreciate to buy one of them to put it on my car.If anyone has it (buckets) for sale I might buy it.Thank YouFilipe Azevedo Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25249-rep-jdm-head-light-covers-instalatioon/ Share on other sites
August 18, 200717 yr comment_218850 IIRC, the fibreglass buckets are correct for your year. i personally like the fibreglass ones better, because for me it's easier to patch FG than it is to pound out metal Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25249-rep-jdm-head-light-covers-instalatioon/#findComment-218850 Share on other sites
August 18, 200717 yr Author comment_218857 HiMy only problem is to know if the fiberglass is strong enough to put the headlight covers?Thank You Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25249-rep-jdm-head-light-covers-instalatioon/#findComment-218857 Share on other sites
August 18, 200717 yr comment_218870 i'm sure it is. you would want to drill a pilot hole first of course, so that the screws don't crack the 'glass...someone who has first hand experience can chime in anytime..... August 18, 200717 yr comment_218872 I am in the process of mounting my NOS headlight set, and had the same situation you have, I chose to go with a metal set becuase the frp is so rare I didn't want to put holes in a pristine original part.Even the NOS covers do not fit all that well, and the original hardware installation method is more complex than it should be, the brackets(see my gallery for pictures) mount on the outside of the bucket and under the cover-meaning there is even more to lift the cover off the surface of the bucket...add to that the rust prone original hardware, and I am using nut rivets and stainless steel hardware-but the fit is tight because of the positioning of the holes relative to the relief of the bucket; because of that, I had considered using POR epoxy behind the bucket and tapping it for the attatchment screws. Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25249-rep-jdm-head-light-covers-instalatioon/#findComment-218872 Share on other sites
August 18, 200717 yr comment_218878 "Putting Holes in a Pristine Set" is not really a concern, as they are OEM pieces. The nut plates differenitate these from the Aftermarket Junk, and if the buckets come with the covers it should be of no concern 'having holes in them'!Stainless replicas would make a practical alternative, but I would keep the OEM pieces at hand if you ever part it out. As good as aftermarket peices are for functionality, the OEM pieces will always command the premium prices IMO. As good as aftermarket peices are for functionality, the OEM pieces will always command the premium prices IMO.They are OEM pieces that can't be gotten from Nissan any more-and as you said "OEM pieces will always command premium prices"-as long as they are in excellent shape, and the NLA versions will get the highest prices as they are the right part for concorse restorations. Considering the availability of the steel buckets and the rarity of the FRP version, it only makes sense to keep the FRP on the shelf for a low vin restoration and use the steel for modification. I don't think Eiji would ever consider installing or selling "aftermarket Junk". If he is involved, the parts are obviously high quality-as an owner of a genuine NOS set, I can tell you the fit of the originals is equivalent to aftermarket parts-they must be fitted-though the finish is beautiful.I keep original boxes, (and FRP buckets) of corse I am keeping the original hardware...Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25249-rep-jdm-head-light-covers-instalatioon/#findComment-218884 Share on other sites
