Gas Tank

240's,260's,280s, have the same basic shape to them up until the 77. The 77 78,79,80,81,82,83 use a diferent fuel pump which is accesed from the top of the tank. You can use a 280 tank in a 240 or 260 but the fit will be tight. The carbed tank looks to be a little smaller in size VS the fuel injected tanks. Your fuel injected tanks also have a bigger pick up line than the carbed tanks.

John, not being a smart a$$, but I think you mean that the fuel sending unit is accessed from above, inside the hatch area (at least on the ZX series) and that the fuel pump is located under the car near(ish) the right hand drive wheel.

If you are thinking of getting a ZX tank for your 240, it will not work-your spare tire sits above the tank, giving need for a different shaped tank than I've got in the ZX since my spare is located in the right rear corner-vertically aligned.

Maybe we should all post pics of our tanks when out of the car? I saw a tank out of a 280 (don't know what year) and it was very different. Didn't think it would fit in a 240. Think it was a later variety tank as mentioned above. Did see a 260 tank out once and it looked slightly larger in the thin section that fits under the tire well.

Fitting a 240 tank into a 240 has never been fun for me. I can't imagine the frustration of trying to fit something which may not.

Still, it might get someone out of a bind if they knew that the tanks crossed over as 280master says. Have you known anyone that has made a successful swap to the 240? This would be good news for some.

Pic of my 2/71 tank attached.

Yes David you are right. I was typing that as the wife  was trying to get me to do one of the many things on the honey do list. :finger: I never got to finish the post fully. :tapemouth

I would not try and swap out the tanks from 240 to 280. It can be done but its kind of a pain in the A$$. I would try to find the right tank for the right job. The pulling of a tank is not hard if you plan it right.

Did a quick search on HybridZ and found that there is some interchange between the Z's. Didn't get confirmation of someone actually doing it (using 280 tank) but here's the link.

Taking tanks out is easy. Getting back in w/o scratching paint = no fun. I used to use a jack to hold my tank while putting it back in. After all the work and BC/CC paint job on the tank it became a two man job to get it in w/o a scratch. Should have used Imron:)
