Consequence is tought or ignored-and there is a consequence to that as well.

I want a better world for my kids.

Wingo-that is the best post of yours I have read I'll have to think of an appropriate and justifiable response!!

I've thought of a good counter to Dave's post! Dave is right that we shouldn't be looking down our noses since we've all "been there done that."

Perhaps the reason so many are so quick to jump on the "theft is a bad thing" bandwagon is that there is some truth to this. I'm not religiously biased but do firmly believe that short term karma exists. In other words this will come back and bite you in the arse in this lifetime. :) That's what we're trying to have you avoid.

In my twenties I started a lawn service and pressure cleaning biz. The lawn service was started with pawn shop bought equipment which was surely "hot". It's funny that once things were up and running and I was buying/could afford $6000 mowers etc that I was stolen from myself. Most of the "hot" equipment was the target though! It's as if I had gotten the equipment on loan.

At age 19 he's too young to know Ratt's song "Round and Round". Crap music but true lyrics.

I'm not saying that stealing is right or justified but.... snip...

No one got hurt (physically) the part was on a car that cost less than a $100 at some auction that was bought to make a profit ...snip...

In other words, the junk yard made more than their fare share off that car

...snip...

I give all and take what I need.

Sorry for the length of each post but there is no simple explaination to defending someones right to what they deserve.

It's not like he stole it to sell it and buy drugs with. He rescued it as far as I'm concerned.

Lock this thread Mike. Poke it with a fork, it's done.

Dave.

But you ARE saying stealing IS justifiable. You yourself came up with "justifications" in the same post. Why do you get to decide when a junkyard's profit margin has been met or exceeded on a given vehicle?

As far as a simple explanation to defending someone's right to what they deserve, how about:

"IF IT ISN'T YOURS, TAKING IT IS CALLED STEALING!"

Stealing, regardless of the end use is still stealing.

What if someone decided that you didn't deserve your car?

...snip... But thats in relation to someones personal property and I believe the DMV has procedures for getting ownership of Abandonned cars....snip...

It's true though that thou shall not steal, out of greed.

:bandit: a.k.a. don't get arrested :tapemouth

Ahhhh, only if it's someone's PERSONAL property is it not fair to steal!

And stealing with a MOTIVE and not greed is sanctioned as well.

What do you get labeled as if you DO get arrested?.... A THIEF.

you know what...screw it it guys...we all have stolen things even from junk yard , ...snip... plus i didnt have the money for it becuase they charge crazy, put your self in my shoes

Whether we have or have not taken something is irrelevant to the central theme here. If it's apparent that, if as you say, we have "all stolen things" then it's obvious from our posts that we have "repented" (to use the religious allegory implied earlier). As such, and in line with the "Cast the first stone", if stealing is unforgiveable and therefore can never be atoned for, then Dave, what do you think Jesus would say? Didn't he permit repenting for one's actions?

Not having the money for something, means you were there with the INTENT to find something you could buy for less money than it was worth, or were there intending on stealing. Hmmm, seems as though this wasn't stealing on the spur of the moment, but a planned heist.

Regarding putting oneself in your shoes, thanks but no thanks.

Whether we've been there or not, again, is irrelevant. The prime motivator for these posts is that we have now been on the OTHER side of the equation you pose and it's far more uncomfortable there. How would you like stepping out of your house to discover someone had decided you had had enough profit/use out of your car and they deserved it more than you?

THAT is why you're getting such a backlash of negative posts.

Dave, how would you feel if it was your parts car the piece came off and you were selling its parts to make a living? Have you made your fair share of selling harnesses and upgrades that we should feel ok about stealing them?...snip...

He is 19, and just like most people will not learn better unless he is expected, and held accountable to. ...snip...

A thread that deals with issues like this is important and as long as no one gets insulting, or inflamatory, and remains factual I don't see a reason to close it.

Consequence is taught or ignored-and there is a consequence to that as well.

I want a better world for my kids.

DITTO Will!

I too, want a better world. I want one where people believe enough in respecting other people's rights more than their own selfish needs.

This thread may get long, and it may be contentious, but let's keep it insult-free. If I've erred in citing prior posts and snipping excerpts out of them, then I will apologize up-front for that. The original posters can apologize for their own material.

So far, the "justifications" for the theft are akin to saying it wasn't a rape if the rapist "really, really LIKED" the girl.

yes, i have stolen things from junkyards. i can only think of one thing, though.... it was a cadillac hood ornament of all things LOL.

anyway, stealing is bad! i'm not trying to get on your case, but i think that the right thing for you to do is go back there and give them some money. it's not going to make it completely better, but stealing is stealing. i don't like it when people steal from me, and I hold myself to high moral standards. i DO NOT steal from people. but that's just me. you're not me :D

Stop making excuses. Especially ones like these that do nothing to help your cause. You might also want to make a little note in your "Life's Lessons Learned" scrapbook, that in addition to petty theft being wrong, it's not wise to brag about it on a public forum!

"public forum"

I drilled out a post on this point earlier and erased it. My point was: asides from not being wise to post it, we (as a group/club) would condone it by not stating our contrary feelings on the matter.

It's a good thing to get out in the open that we are opposed to this type of behavior, this string screams that point very clearly.

Actually, we all HAVEN'T stolen things from a junkyard, and what you choose to give away to others has no bearing on the discussion of what someone DIDN'T give permission for you to take.

You don't have the money for it? Well isn't that the reason most petty thieves steal anything? You don't get a pass because just you have a need and no money-and if that yard "charges crazy" you need to be visiting a different yard.

DAMN, I mean, really! If I've got a cracked dizzy cap and have no money can I walk into Discount Auto Parts and pocket one?

It's the same thing.

If you go into a man's business and take walk out with product without paying for it, it's theft, pure and simple. It may not be as clean and pretty as the new parts in the store, but it's the JY is a business nonetheless, and the stuff there is merchandise nonetheless.

It isn't alright, and frankly the attitude that it is or that "others do it" disgusts me.

For those who tuned in late, the Dana Carvey doing George Bush version:

Stealing... Bad!

Buying, Good!

Stealing would not be prudent at this juncture....

Aingonna do it...

Do better next time, treat people the way you want to be treated!

Fairlady I'm sorry we're all coming down on you but most of us are old enough to be your father or grandfather. We just want you to have a good life, pride in yourself and in your accomplishments.... Which includes your ride of course. I'm sure you're not a clepto and are probably a decent guy but bragging about jacking something to a board is a way of saying something. What were you trying to say?

I was in your shoes when I first bought my Z. I had it three days and a driver w/o insurance pulled out in front of me. He "stole" from me by not being socially responsible.

In fixing the damage it took me six months to prep the car for paint. There were times I couldn't even afford a sheet of sandpaper and had to wait until I could. I walked a few miles to/from my crummy, low paying job while going to school instead of driving my dream car. Around this time I had a GF move in and constantly bitch at me for having the car. In time the car was finished and on the road and the GF loved it and I loved loving her in it. :) (Maybe that's why the seats gave out so quickly) I've had some "steals" in buying parts for the Z but have never stolen anything for it.

The last thing I ever stole for a piece of transportation was a can of fixAflat when I was 16. I had no money and needed my motorcyle on the road so I walked into a store shoved it in my jacket pocket and walked right out. Never looked to see if I was being watched. Just did it. This is just the kind of crazy sh@# that kids do and people that are older than 18 should not do. I like being able to vote and own guns so why would I screw it up with a felony?

It's a rude awakening when you realize that you have to pull your own weight in society. There are lots of people who don't but look at the quality of their lives.

That's cool. Fun in my Z someone raised you right:)

Behavior is molded by environment... where you live, who you hang with, parents, etc. I grew up in a few bad places and some good ones. (Single parent household) At age 15 I had a friend who could steal ANYTHING right in front of you. I chose not to hang with him too much but he was an extreme example of a NY kid gone bad. As a kid I stole a few things but nothing extreme. It was kind of a rush like smashing pumpkins on Halloween. As I got older I began to see how a person's actions shape their being. I also realized that the people you "hang" with determine the standards you set for yourself. I actively chose to become a different person than my peers. Ignoble acts done repeatedly diminish one's being. This is something that people can pick up on and will keep you from being succesful in this world unless you are very resourceful.
