Posted August 29, 200717 yr comment_220047 Well,I just took the 73 on a very short drive and when I was about half way home the car started to sputter, it got worse the more you feed it gas, but you could come off the pedal and rev it in neutral. I put it back in gear and started down the street and again it sputtered and you could notice that it had a loss of power as well.......I am no mechanic so any feedback would be appreaciated. Could it be:Fuel filterspark plugsbad gasor something more serious...Thanks,Mally Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25358-sputteringloss-of-power/ Share on other sites
August 29, 200717 yr comment_220050 I once had gas tank had begun to shed rust into the fuel system. It got so bad that I had to change fuel filters every few miles.. sometimes every couple miles. Change the filter and see if it clears up. Your description sounds exactly like what happened to me with my tank. I tried a JY tank but it was rusted too. As a temp fix I cleaned the tank's insides and got a few more years out of it. Eventually I refurbished the tank properly and now all is well. Could be a fuel pump going bad. The pumps on mine always failed abruptly with little or no warning. (My 71 has only a mechanical pump) I doubt it would be the pump though. Check the plugs of course. If the fuel filter fixes it get a couple more spares for the road. (Until you resolve the tank issue) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25358-sputteringloss-of-power/#findComment-220050 Share on other sites
August 29, 200717 yr comment_220051 An easy thing to do would be to drain the tank and just see what your gas looks like. If it's rusty, you will want to drop the tank and get it cleaned. Might be time for new fuel hoses, too. If your gas is stale and/or yellow looking, put in some fresh juice and see if it solves your problem.I had symptoms like yours when my mechanical fuel pump went bad, so Jimmy could be right about that (good call). August 29, 200717 yr comment_220062 I know this doesn't make much sense but anyway...My 260 would almost die if accelerated but pull over put in neutral and would rev fine, take off again same thing. Only reason found fault was because wire going to ballast resistor started to smoke. Bridged out ballast resisitor to get me to store, changed out and all good. Don't know how likely to have same fault but there's another check.
