Shipping options/companies from USA to Australia?

Hi Guys,

I've found some carbs I'm interested in located in the US and thinking about shipping to Melbourne, Australia. The seller asked that I nominate a freight company!

I wanted to get some quotes, any idea on who I can use for a one off shipment Sea fright US to Melb?

Since you mention it's a "one-of" shipment, and it is some carbs, I presume you're only referring to ONE PAIR of carbs.

If that's the case, then UPS, DHL, or FED-EX are going to be your best and in the long run, cheapest bets. Yes, they'll be a bit spendy pound for pound compared to a Sea Freight company, but you will not be dealing with having the carbs crated, then consolidated into a container by a freight consolidator for shipment on the next full container they may fill, then to deal with their choice of importer and customs broker and .....weeks later (sometimes even a month or two) you'll finally get your carbs only to discover that there was a problem someplace along the line and they refuse your claim. Now this is a WORST case scenario but not necessarily an unusual situation.

While you may pay $100 or a bit more for any one of the 3 carriers listed above, they'll deliver promptly and with guarantees.

You could also ship via Postal Service with Registered Parcel Post with Insurance and that has some assurances, but not as much as the big three.

But that's just my opinion.

A pair of carbs should fit in a USPS (Our Postal Service) Flat Rate box and the shipping cost for that is $37.00. I have shipped a couple spindle pin pullers to Australia using that service and it works great and takes about 10 days.

Have the seller take them to the U.S. Post Office.

The U.S. Post Office uses Fed-x for their oversea's shippments anyway and the U.S. Post Office rates are less.

Fed-X was twice as much as the U.S. Post Ofiice to ship a tire to Japan - and it was there in three or four days.

The US Post Office is the best for normal sized boxes and I've shipped dozens of parts to Australia using them. Tracking is impossible once it leaves the US but none of my shipments have ever been lost.

I also use BAX Global for larger shipments. Their service is outstanding and they've never damaged or lost a thing in 5 years of shipping hoods and hatches around the world.

Bad Dog Parts uses the US Postal Service for most if not all of our overseas shipping and we have never had a problem with a lost shipment. The only issue we have is the length requirement of 42 inches (our frame rails are 48 and 52 inches respectively for the 240 and 280 rails so we have to pre cut them).

They have the best prices too......

While not always a solution you can always weigh the idea of turning the cost of shipping into an airline ticket to where you are getting the carbs and having a vacation. Yes there are other costs involved, but hey, you can always meet up with some of the Z car guys on the board here ... be sure to check the total weight and size of the box you have to bring back. The general rules for airlines are 62 inches for the combined high, length and width and a weight of no more than 32 kilos (70lbs).

You can also buy stuff for the Z car while on the trip and save on the cost and shipping at the same time, or resell to others in Australia to help pay for the trip.
