Posted September 9, 200717 yr comment_221054 Bro can't find his '71 Z manual so I don't know what's what under the hood. Anywhere I can find this stuff? I see something suspect coming off the battery and into the front of the Z to the Passenger side under the dashboard... multiple wires. No idea what that is. Thanks tons for any help. This might help a little:http://asta.bizhosting.com/240Z-WhatsThis.htm:surprisedAsta Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25478-1971-240-z-learning-and-stuck/ Share on other sites
September 9, 200717 yr comment_221066 It's difficult to tell from that picture. Originally, the battery post nearest the center of the car was the negative post. (Many cars have had that reversed by now.) The negative post should have two wires - a very heavy wire that is bolted to one of the starter mounting bolts, and a smaller wire that bolts to the firewall. The positive post should have only one heavy wire from the factory, which connects to the starter solenoid. The wire bundle that goes through the firewall near the hood latch is the wiring for the wiper motor. The odd wire near the battery? Who knows. It's not factory. Maybe for an aftermarket stereo?? The owner's manual did not have a wiring diagram in it. I've attached a picture of my late '71 (7/71 build date) for comparison. September 9, 200717 yr comment_221081 That's the branch of the "engine room" wiring harness that connects to the instrument harness. For a picture go to www.carfiche.com, navigate to the S30 parts list in their microfiche section & find section 24.PS: The battery cable in the picture looks like an OEM negative cable, with an engine ground and a smaller chassis ground to the firewall. September 9, 200717 yr comment_221089 The arrow is pointing at the wiper motor boot and the wires that go to the wiper motor. The single wire coming from that is obviously the original ground wire that had problem on the inside, so they grounded it directly to the battery's negative post. September 11, 200717 yr comment_221238 Your battery is positioned perpendicular to ours.Strange; I've never see a 240Z with the battery not parallel to the firewall. September 11, 200717 yr Author comment_221295 See what a novice I am! I'll get in touch with my brother about this, he might have done something I missed to change that. If so, why and so on, I have no idea. He's been the only owner of this car. Thanks again. September 11, 200717 yr comment_221309 I looked at the other pictures, the battery is installed normally, the same as mine. As shown in this one:http://asta.bizhosting.com/images/Rolfs-240Z-Jlyl200737.JPG Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25478-1971-240-z-learning-and-stuck/#findComment-221309 Share on other sites
September 11, 200717 yr comment_221311 But the extra wire is undoubtedly related to this non-stock gadget.http://asta.bizhosting.com/images/240Z-Aug23-2007-1.JPG Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/25478-1971-240-z-learning-and-stuck/#findComment-221311 Share on other sites
