Studies have shown talking on the phone, even with a hands free kit is dangerous while driving.

I was stopped at the lights one time, there was a nicely restored Gemini (its an Aussie branded Japanese car) next to me, that a young guy had taken the time to do up. I was checking it out, when a another guy rammed into the back of him. I looked over and he was on the phone with a hands free earpiece, and was too distracted by the conversation to stop the car before slamming into an innocent motorist.

And it wasn't like the lights had just turned red, we had been stationary for at least a minute.

Lucky for me I want in that lane.

In California there currently is a bill winding its way through congress to prohibit teenagers from using any type of mobile communication device while driving. I think this a good idea. Kids are a precious commodity and those of us that are parents need to insure this happens.

Not kidding, I text all the time while I am driving. I also talk on the phone. I usually do this while I am on a long stretch of empty highway and there isn't much traffic. When the traffic gets tight or I'm in a area that has people walking... I put the phone down.

It really isn't that big of a deal, but, I do admit that driving some cars take more concentration than others. For instance, it's IMPOSSIBLE to text or even talk on my cell phone while driving my 240z. My truck is automatic and luxurious, so, it doesn't take that much effort to drive (one finger steering).

A blanket statement that says all texting or even cell phone use while driving isn't fair. I do most of my "business" while driving and have had zero issues.

^ i get what you mean, since i'm driving my Z as a DD now (and the wife has the infiniti) it would be incomprehensible to attempt phone communication while driving...

There is a positive side, regarding people who insist on using their cell phones, to talk or text, while driving....what ever experience they think they might possess or how ever safe they think they are! It's bound to decrease the number of idiots in the gene pool!!! I'm quessing you have all heard of the "Darwin Awards"......well, for folks that continue to exercise their right to be irresponsible and inconsiderate of others, they may just end up listed in the Darwin Award files. The negative side of this is.....the idiots are bound to take a few smart folks along with them!

I am going to resist the urge to get on my soapbox with this topic. However...I have a magnetic sign I made for the tailgate of my truck that reads,'Guns don't kill people, drivers with cellphones do,. I also have a mirror-image printed sign that hangs from my pass. visor that says 'Get the F**K off the phone, A$$hole!; so they can read it IF they look in the mirror. What did y'all do before they invented this scourge on humanity?

I'm a senior in high school and I avoid the traffic going in and out of the school at all costs when in my Z. I've seen plenty of ditsy girls ram into the back of cars including a car I was driving while talking on cell phones. It is pretty hard for me to do anything but drive in my Z between paying attention to traffic, shifting, not having power steering and trying to figure out where that rattling noise is coming from. If the phone call is that important I pull over in a parking lot. Personally I think there should be some kind of law against it.

Maybe this should be over in the funnybone section, but it seems rather apropos that it be here, now. This was just sent to me via text message, and I am using my cell phone internet connection to post it here as I drive the interstate 240 bypass around Asheville at 72 mph (not sure, no speedo)...

Just kidding.

This morning on the Interstate,

I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new Cadillac

doing 65 mph with her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her

eyeliner. I looked away for a couple seconds and when I looked back she

was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup.

As a man, I don't scare easily. But she scared me so much; I dropped my

electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the

confusion of trying to straighten out the car, using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away

from my ear which fell into the coffee between my legs,

splashed, and burned Big Jim and the Twins, ruined the darn phone,

soaked my trousers, and disconnected an important call...........

Darn women drivers!!

I drive quite a bit for work (about 40k per year) so I see all kinds of things out on the roads. I never text while driving and move as quickly as I safely can away from anyone I see doing it. Not only shlould it be banned, but it should also be an automatic revocation of your license for doing it. Incredibly unsafe.

I refuse to use my phone while driving except to check the time (if the radio is flashing 12:00 after a battery terminal disconnect).

I really don't even like having a conversation with another person in the car so much either. I am constantly trying to stay alert because, to me, every other driver on the road is a potential threat who WILL plow into me if I allow them to. I've had so many near collisions because some idiot veered into my space and I had to take evasive action. I count myself lucky so far.

I have been shocked and appalled at some of the things I have seen people doing while driving around town. Texting... reading a NOVEL propped up on the steering wheel... putting on clothing, i.e. neckties.... fiddling with a running laptop in the passenger seat. I avoid these people like the plague. If I hang back and watch them for a bit I will usually start to see them weave around or even run a stoplight or stop sign. It's clear to see natural selection is still at work every day, but it is unfortunate that these fools also endanger innocent people around them.

After about 4 years of using my 240z regularly as a DD it finally ended up in the body shop as of today... why? Because a sorority girl neighbor of mine parked illegally in the garage spot next to mine (usually occupied by a meticulous Audi driving male) and plowed into me either coming in or pulling out. I have to give her credit that she did leave a note, but it still angers me that after all the close calls I've saved my car from, it really came down to some idiot breaking the rules in a secure garage I pay a substantial fee to keep my Z parked in.
