MSA "Bullet" mirror installed

Got a set of these for my birthday and put one on the driver's side to make sure they'll be OK to drive with - the mirror is smaller and lower than stock - and I'm pretty happy with it. The mirror seems to be slightly convex which helps visibility. I had to drill a new hole to be able to mount it, but in a place where I could revert to "stock" and still cover the new hole. Once I drill holes in the passenger side though, there's no turning back! :D

First 3 are with the new mirror, 4th photo is w/the stock mirror

Looking great! Great looking car too! I had to do the samething and drill holes on the passenger side for a mirror, but it sure helps having one there I must say.

Thanks!

Yeah, the idea/need for a passenger-side mirror is what got me to this point... I had seen the new bullet mirrors in the MSA catalog, and I thought that might be a nice subtle 70's-look mod that would get me my 2nd mirror. I guess I could've gone with a another stock mirror for the PS and rotated the mirror 180 degrees, but my original DS mirror is pitted and the glass rattles anyway, so I would've wanted to buy 2 new ones at almost $100 a pop

So yea, I think I like this option better :D

Good timing for this thread. I always liked this style of mirror better than the stock one and was surprised to find a brand new one in a parts lot that I bought a few years ago, before I even had a Z. I am going to need another one now and want to make sure the MSA bullet mirror is the same. This one measures 4" across the glass housing (not convex) and the base has the exact dimensions as the Bullet II on the Z-Store site. They don't give a dimension for the glass. Can someone measure the glass? It appears to be made of chrome plated stainless.

Since my car is in the metal working stage, I was planning on changing the mounting location as far forward on the door as possible. I think that may achieve the proper adjustment needed on the passenger side. I love the look on BadDog's car and wonder if they would look OK moved forward?

Mike - good point, I'll have to check this by sitting in my passenger seat and trying to get a good look out the mirror on the driver's side...

Ron - I think MSA's site says these Bullet II's are "smaller" than the originals, but I'll measure them anyway and get back to ya. I found a similar mirror here: http://www.finishlineaccessories.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=191 They sell seperate flat and convex versions with a 3-1/4" mirror. The mirror and "bullet" look the same as the MSA ones I have, but the base is slightly different....

Bo - thanks, but FYI they were painted black by the wheel mfg. They're probably not the same wheel that you have (though I'm sure pretty much any turbine style wheel would look good w/ the paint). I've never seen another pair of 'em anywhere, they're a story in their own right :D

I also put these on my car earlier in the year. I like the style and even put together a review for Motorsport. You can see the review here: http://www.classiczcars.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=13&cat=22

If you could add your comments to the review and put a link to this thread it would be appreciated. ;)

The mirrors are very good looking and function well, but, my only complaint on these mirrors are their size. They sit a little below the window edge and care should be taken to make sure the passenger side can be seen correctly (especially before holes are drilled in the door).

Mike, I don't know how I missed that Review, but I did. Guess it didn't come up in my Search on "bullet mirror" last weekend when I was installing the DS one and looking for tips on where exactly to mount it, need for more holes, etc. Got a lot of hits on fender-mount mirrors though LOL. Yes, I'll add my comments and a link as soon as I figure out about mounting the PS one :)

I was taught an early age that honesty is the best policy. I was also taught that you have nothing nice to say don't say it at all.

Buy you did ask " wudya think "

So I must tell you. I like your car and i don't like the mirror at all. I think you should remove it.

Hope I didn't ruin it for you. Just my opinion.

I want to fit similar mirrors and have a pair of light alloy 'Downton' bullet mirrors just waiting.

I tend to agree with Geezer (being one myself) that they should be a little more forward.

A quick and dirty edit of BadDog's pic shows the look I'm after:

BadDog - I've been struggling with the outside mirror issure for some time. Can you tell me about the construction of the mirror. Currently I have faded - rusty black "racing" mirrors. While I prefer the original mirror - I really need two mirrors.

Are they metal/chromed or plastic/chromed? The "racing" mirrors I have seem very cheap and lightweight. They can't hold their position anymore - but not sure if its cause they are old - or were just poorly made.

As far as opinions.....It's what YOU want on your car that matters. If you like them - thats all that really matters!
