In refereal to the brands of paint you said Omni and Dalton I haven't heard of them. I work for Dulux or PPG in Australia. Clear over base is what we refer to as 2 Pac paint. or 2 part paint. Base which is the colour and clear of course clear over the top of the base colour. Acrylic is on a colour which doesn't need clear over the top it can be applied but the solid colours don't need it. Now...........colours like greens and some blues have very poor coverage and may need half a dozen coats just to cover the primer. The way to save colour is to use the correct colour primer to match the paint colour. This way you will cover the primer in only one or 2 coats. Hope this helps See ya

I've used both PPG paint and Omni on my race cars. The Omni is quite innexpensive compared to the PPG. The difference is that the paint guy told me Omni is more of a Tractor paint. It is less costly because it isn't as good. It looks fine when it is applied - especially if it is done with good surface prep and by a qualified painter. But it isn't as hard and I don't think keeps as nicely. If you aren't building a show car but just want a nice looking Z, I would think the Omni would be fine -- especially if you are on a budget.

And yes, my first race car was painted with 10 cans of Krylon primer under 11 cans of Krylon John-Deere Yellow - looked great for a month until the sun faded it -- the corner workers used to call it the Butterscotch Turd.

I used a brand called "Nason", made by DuPont. I was told it's a step or two down from their top-o-the-line brand. I got it in an acrylic-urethane, single stage paint. It flowed on nicely and I had few problems. So far it still looks great, but it's only 3 months old.

As for deciding between a single stage paint or 2 stage paint (base coat-clear coat), think of it this way:

If you're going to use a metallic color, you must use a 2 stage. Metallics by themselves just won't hold a shine and they're not that durable.

If you're going to use a solid color, you can use only a single stage paint.

In a base coat-clear coat, the base is a pigmented paint. The clear is a pigmentless paint. If using a solid color, why put 2 layers of paint on when you only need one (aside from the normal covering layers)? I have seen single stage paint jobs in acrylic or enamels that are pushing 10 yrs old and look like a base coat-clear coat system.

I went with an acrylic urethane for the durability. And I went for a single stage system because I could not afford to put 2 layers of paint on my car when I didn't really need it.
