Ping is a network tool that's used to ascertain whether a certain host is available across a TCP/IP network.

But that's probably not what you're asking.....

I think you're talking about pinging, or knocking, that would be related to a combustion engine, right? In that case... :) ...you can find a lot of information on this topic by googling 'engine detonation'.

Basically, detonation is ignition of the gas/air mix in your cylinder before the spark of the spark plug. It's not really very good for your engine, and is often related to a timing problem.

Ping or "pre-detonation" caused as above by low octane fuels with stock timing. It is basically a noise from the engine which sounds like a rattle and can ocurr whilst normal driving or occasionally when the engine is switched off, ie., the engine runs on with the ignition switched off. Can be dialled out by resetting the timing but with reduced performance.
