Unless you use a state-of-the-art tube frame chassis with the engine located as far back in the chassis as legaly possible you might make an interesting go of it. The shear weight and physical dimensions of the L-28 engine make weight distribution a bit of a major factor. Fuel injection would also be a must to take `advantage` of the 33mm S.I.R. . I also believe that the car formula needs to shed 100#s or so.

To us Z purists this "Z car" now becomes a mongrel........:ermm:

The reason I was able to push thru a reclassification of the Z from 2 to 3was quite simple. GT3 numbers were way down and I simply hoped that by reclassifying the car from a class it couldn`t be competitive in any more to one that it might have a `chance`, it just might bring some of the older tub chassis cars out of storage or lure a few out of vintage racing to simply add to the GT3 numbers. The Z still can be run in either class ( GT2 or GT3 ).

Yes, Gregg could switch to GT3........ but just for fun. To be really competitive you have to have a tube frame and a lot of enthusiasm.

I WON 3 nationals last year by attrition but for a RunOffs victory in a tub Z ..... forget it. The `07 RunOffs experience was a treat for me simply because I had no expectations of being competitive but it was satisfying because I had the chance to see what this old tub could do. I was also running on 600 endro compound Goodyears........ 475s would have been worth a second or two but that wasn`t the point. Just being there was my goal. The car got rave reviews from those who saw it and stopped by to say hello....... everyone likes a real Z.

Running a Z in vintage racing can be a real blast. Now that most vintage clubs a welcoming Zs and 510s we can now run these cars as they were raced in the seventies..... ie real horsepower. One of my customers ran his Z at a vintage race at Road America last summer and ran 4th or 5th in a field of some 60 cars....... being beaten only by a few 911s that we though might have `questionable` sized engines. Vintage racing can be a excellent alternative. I know....... it aint the same....... but it`s another option for some.

As such, I may just turn the Z Car Home Page into the "DATSUN 240Z Car Home Page", and offer to contribute any/all other materials to the other Model Specific Web Sites (most of them have more than duplicated the information anyway) ... My main interest has always been the Datsun 240-Z and I may just devote more time to that now.

If possible maintain a full S30 orientation. There are enough commonalities with the vehicles and a dearth of 260/280 specific sites (that being said, perhaps we should include the S130 as well...)

Just wondering Jeff. If the SCCA doesn't give the EP 240Z some concessions I am afraid Greg won't be making the trip to HPT next year. I think are building the white/red 240Z into a real vintage racer!

I`m afraid the EP Z won`t be getting anything more. I`d bet on that. Greyson showed the car`s true hand, but sadly didn`t win the big one.

As to the red/white 240........ it`s a sweet candidate seeings how it was a `ground-upper`. Just drop in a 300+ H.P. motor and a stouter gearbox and go ripping up corvetes!! I can quite often qualify my sled on the pole of a vintage big bore group.......... it really messes with the V8 egos. 8-)

I don't know. I think the Prelude & Mazdas have widened the performance gap alot since Grayson almost won the Runoffs. The 240Z should be given at least some weight reduction. I don't think their is much more Sam can do motor wise.

Yeah, I agree on a few concessions. The ante has been raised quite a bit. Your efforts are to be commended.......... you`re giving it all it has. I assume you`ve been petitioning the AdHoc pointing out the `upper ante`?? If not I`m afraid it might be a bit late for `08...........but you never know. State you case.............. you`ve nothing to loose.

Rick, I was successful in my campaign for the 240Z in E Production. You should see a weight reduction in the next fasttrack. Supposedly this is how it's going to break down. Prelude +100lbs, 1st Gen RX7 +50 lbs, Z car -70 lbs. How about that?? The first competitiion adjustment they've ever given the Z with the exception of smaller vented front brakes.

It`s always nice to see a weight reduction for the Z however 50#s is negligible. I know, I know......... I`m raining on your parade, sorry. :nervous:

When they added 50#s and then another 25#s to the 510 in GP we just put it where it `helped` and we went faster. I believe they gave you a weight reduction just to make you think they ( the AdHoc ) are trying to help you but I`m afraid it just looks like `lip service` to me. Adding 75 #s to the RX-7 is also a mute point...... maybe 150#s OR reducing the venturis in the carb might actually make a difference. The only safe and feasable ( not to mention cheap ) way to slow down faster cars is to restrict the intake. Adding a lot of weight adds its` own problems of safety etc. . Speaking from experience I hate to see these `bones` being thrown about this way.

Good to see you guys back at it and having fun. I`m just crying in my beer `cause I`m out of it for a while ( re vintage ). :ermm:

Yes, rain on the parade. The net difference between me and Loshak will be 170#, and with me and Thrash will be 120#. It's physics, weight is bad. When I'm light in a race car, I am faster. Oh well, I am looking forward to it.

PS. We don't have issues with needing to move weight around the Z car to get good distribution so adding weight to help with corner weighting hopefully is a moot point.....
